No-salt water softeners -- anybody have one?

Anybody familiar with these? Scalewatcher http://www.scalewatcher.us/NARESStarenlarged.html
I have had nothing but bad luck with water softeners. I've lost the resin bed in two of them, and I swore, "No More!". But this thing has no resin bed or salt, and it seems pretty foolproof -- if it works. We've got a hot tub and I'm trying to find a way to soften the water so I don't have to treat the water in the hot tub so much.

Anybody got one? Are they any good? They actually claim that they will remove scale already present in your plumbing. I'm skeptical. (But then if you know me, I'm Mr. Skeptic).

Thanks in advance for the opinions,

Brian

We've got something to that effect.. Big a$$ magnet that is clamped on the main just after the meter and filter. 10 years and no plugged up faucet screens and a minimal film on the hotwater cooker about every three months.

my wife and I have tried several different types of water softeners, they would last for 6 months and then stop up,quit working or something.we live in fla.so we had very, very hard water, until we went to 'culligan water softeners',problem solved.we have had our unit for 14 years with not the 1st problem,cw

I would be skeptical because even if the magnetic field could affect the water as it passes through how could it continue to have the effect downstream? The calcium and magnesium ions are still there, it's not like you add something for them to combine with unless they can tell you what the chemical reaction is.

Oh you bet. Works great on water lines.
Might as well use it on car gas line to save gas too.
Or clap it on your leg to stop pain.
What ever you want to believe.
People will believe any thing.

We bought our current house ten years ago. It has a really rank (sulpher and rust) well, we buy bottled water to drink. We have a two-tank softner (you never run out of soft water), brand begins with a "K" and it does a good job. But in order to have good water for other uses it is too salty to drink. We have few rust stains on out fixtures, but I still have to run a carbon filter for the water to smell O.K.

If you have salt taste to water coming through softener it is simply not back flushing enough. Needs minor adjustment.

actually, I probably need a new well pump with more constant pressure. Current well-pump is old, running a 60/40 cut-off switch on it. I don't know why it keeps running. Time and money will determine replacement of it.

They aren't actually water softeners, they are anti-scalers. They work by transforming the dissolved Calcium into tiny Calcium crystals before they enter the plumbing system. This protects your plumbing system and is especially useful if you have a secondary water heater like an outdoor woodstove or geothermal heat pump that heats incoming cold water since the radiators used tend to plug up with lime.

For more info, see these from Watts (an established brand name).
