231 Massey Ferguson Drivetrain shear pin

I think my 231 Massey has sheared a pin somewhere in the drive train, my son was driving it and when he tried to take off up a hill he heard a pop and now none of the gears work. I had this happen when I first got the tractor and I took it to a mechanic and he said it sheared a pin that was designed to do this under extreme pressure. Can someone tell me where this is and how I can check it out, the mechanic is no longer in business.

There is a coupler in the rear end that will do what your talking about. To my knowledge there is no shear pin. This coupler has a cotter pin in it to hold it in place. If cotter pin comes out coupler will move forward and not engage pinion. I think the only way to see this is to take the top cover off. I have repaired one with missing cotter pin and one that broke the coupler.

You are correct, after reading your reply, I remember the mechanic showing me a connector sleeve that had a valley milled in it which made it the weak spot in the coupler, and in the valley is were the breakage occured as it was designed to. What is involved in verifying this is the problem and replacing it.

Unless the 231 is different than all the other
MF models, you do not have to remove the top cover. Remove small side cover, slide the coupler
over the short section of shaft and slide them
out together. Chuck
 
Chuck, I have taken the side plate off and the sleeve was busted. I removed the short part of the sleeve but don't have room to remove the longer side. One person told me to put my high/low shifter into low then pull the shaft and sleeve out together. Do you know if this is correct.

Got it fixed, thanks to those who replied. I only had to remove the side plate, then pull out front shaft. Put on new sleeve and replaced shaft. Seems to be woking fine so far.
