Congratulations to y'all on your award winning alfalfa.

Three generations involved with the hay production; all should be proud.

congrats. I've been making alf all my life and selling it. It's pretty nice hay usually and my customers keep coming back but I never seem to get the quality you dairy guys can. Is it because I don't have any manure history or whats your secret?

I doubt very much if the manure has anything to do with it. We do soil testing and ad the micro nutients needed. Have had experience with testing lab on soil tests, This field had been in Bermuda grass and never got going. Burned it down with Roundup and seeded last fall. Had to roll the water on till end of November. Son has degree in Animal Science and Grandson with a degree in Range and Soil Management. I just make them think. We did alot of research on varietes of alfalfa That really makes a difference. My e-mail is open drop me a message and I will give you more details.

My congrat's too. I just lost 27 acres to a week and a half of steady rain. Just a tad too wet, even with preservative. First time I ever lost an entire field. Hurts, since third cutting in the fall is always the softest and greenest of the year.
I can smell the quality from the picture!!

We run into that problem with a gent we buy hay form once in a while. He used to grow mainly grass for horse guys, but he started doing more alfalafa the last few years. The cows just wouldn't milk on it, and worse yet they wouldn't breed back. Lately we haven't gone back to him anymore. Girls waste too much and it just doesn't pay to buy it.

We buy better quality seed to start with and I'm not sure what other differences there are. Our hay just turns out better.

We do cut ours quite a bit sooner which makes it much nicer quality instead of letting it fully blossom and get hard. Espescially 1st crop.
