OT - Troubleshoot Oil Furnace

Broke down this morning and went to start the furnace for the family. I am of the opinion that we should never start heating until Thanksgiving, but that is a different story (South-Central PA). Anyway, pretty much nothing happened. Have incoming power, but that is all I have verified yet. Any advise or order of things to look at for a DIYer. Wife already wants me to call the service people. Not even a response when I press the burner reset so I can't even bleed the fuel line.

What should I look at next?

TIA,

Kirk

Pain in the arse to have turn on the heat already don't it? Started mine Monday. Shoot,I just turned it off the 10th of June.

As for the no power thing, depends on the make of furnace. Twice now in the fall when I've started mine, the door on the fan has been ajar. There's a switch on mine so it won't start up with that open. I'd start by opening and closing that if it has a switch on there.

Another time, the box on top where the reset button is was bad,at least the service man thought so. Wanted over $400 for a new one, installed. I had him order it and put it on myself. The next year it did it again. My son found a loose connection where one of the wires spades slides on.

There's a few places to start.

Should have added it is a Trane furnace with a Becket AFG burner. Have changed nozzles in the past, but to just have nothing really seems odd.

Check for power at the furnace.

Jumper the thermostat leads ( T T ) and see if that kicks it in. Thermostats DO fail from time to time.

If those suggestions don't help, you may have a bad/tripped limit switch or the flame safety control may have failed. Have any nearby lightning strikes this summer?

While I was sitting here the fan has come on for no discernible reason. Am going to see if burner will come on to make a little warmth now.

Should be pretty straight forward. Hit the reset button, observe the flame, and see what's happening. If the flame is correct, but the breaker trips, you've probably got a flame-sensor problem. If the flame is not correct, check the obvious. Bad fuel filter, plugged nozzle, bad air shutter adjustment, bad refractory blanket, etc.

As far as calling the furnace man goes? I would not assume a high level of expertise. Some know a lot, and some don't. They all charge money. I'd certainly never call one, sny more then I'd call someone to fix my truck or tractor.

Make sure the draft vent is moving freely. I had one that would stay closed the first time the boiler fired up every fall. All I had to do was go down and flip it open and closed then it would be fine all the rest of the season. If you use a powervent to vent the exhaust to the outside there is a small tube inside it that detects air movement. should that become plugged the burner will not fire.I had to shove a small steel wire in it to clean it out one time. The powervent would start but the burner would not fire. It would pop the reset switch on the burner if I recall.

Check the stack temp. control and see if it's in the starting position, mine stuck a little from being to the start position, had to get new stack temp controller.

This part is called an oil primary.Cost is 59 and 68 bucks at graingers,Photocell is seperate at 18 bucks.Better stay clear of that serviceman.

Yea,retail I think it was $120. Never called that place for service again. Every job has a book price for them, parts and labor regardless of any real world circumstances.

Bob has it right. Simple things first. Has to call for heat. Determine this before moving further or you will just chase ghosts.
