pony motors

my grandfather had an old tractor that used a small gasoline engine to start a larger kerosene or diesel. this was in the late fifties.does anyone know what it might have been?

Probably a John Deere 70, 720, 730 or 80, 820 or 830. Many larger crawler tractors used pony motors as well, but I assume you're talking about a wheel tractor.

Don't forget about the DEERE "R", as well, DEERE'S first diesel, which came out in 1949 and preceded the "number series" diesels.

And, 30 or 40 years before that, some large tractors, IIRC, the Mogul was one, used a pony engine to start the big gas/kero engine.

Bingo! I was trying to think if I missed any, and did miss that one.

Can't think of any other makes of "modern" tractors (say, 1940 on) that used pony, though.

probably was not an IHC, as they did not need a pony to start their diesel, which was out 15 years before JD.this was the WD40 mcormick deering that started on gas and then after running a while to warm up it switched over by itself to diesel, through a trip mechanism after so many revolutions.this was the only model tractor to have this feature other than the tractractors of the same era.the later WD9 up to the 650 were manual switch over to diesel.it was a good system and worked well properly maintained.then when the 560 came out it had glow plugs to start its 6 cyl. engine .

I hate eating crow but you are correct. I had to check parts book to see it. I was misled because I had seen a 820 locally that had come out of Canada that was electric start. But I guess as similiar as the 820/830 were it must have been switched. Like the unstyled electric start A I saw yesterday, go figure.

If it was yellow or gray had tracks a Caterpillar they made few wheeled tractors too. Green & yellow then a John Deere. Was a good site on those JD 2 cylinder diesels twocylinderdisel.com but looks like it is down or shut down? Check the side bar on the Johnny Popper site for more info on old JD 2 cylinder diesels.

I think it was more-or-less a misconception as most assume if the 720 came with a direct start option, that the 820 should also have that option. Yes, I've seen unstyled JD's with electric start, it was pretty easy to do as the electric start parts from a early styled A would bolt right up to the unstyled and you could swap out the flywheel.
