what is the difference between a positive ground and a negative ground? I bought this tractor and it was positive ground 12 volt. Now I am putting it back to positive ground 6 volt. I there any thing special I need to do beside changing the generator, voltage regulator, coil and the starter. What are the positive or negative sides to a positive ground tractor?

I don't think you have to change anything for parts,,, but I could be wrong,, however, this is what I did.

Switch the Battery Cables.
Swap the wires on the Coil terminals.
To correct the residual magnetism in your generator, This will get charging started in the right direction,
Find your voltage regulator,
Use a jumper wire, hold one end on A1 terminal and BRIEFLY touch the other end to the F1 terminal 2 or 3 times,
It will spark, but it won't hurt you,
check any fuses and replace if any have blown,
Now your good to go.

I hope that helps,,, Go Zeke

Many early 6 volt farm tractors were Positive ground i.e. the batterys POS post went to frame ground.......... If you want to rewire yours from 12 to 6 volt Pos ground:

Change to 6 volt battery....with its POS
grounded..........Id use 00 gauge Battery n
Starter n Ground cables

Get a 6 volt Generator and a 6 volt Voltage
Regulator thats suitable for POS ground

Use a 6 volt coil

Match the coil for Pos ground i.e. its lil
- wires to Ign switch while its + to distributor

If it has an ammeter and it reads backwards,
its leads may need reversed. Depends on how it
was wired before

BEFORE STARTING POLARIZE THE GENERATOR

Momentarily flash jump a wire from its BAT
terminal to its ARM/GEN terminal and you should
get a spark.

NOTE:: DO NOT flash jump to the gennys FLD post
Do as I posted above

You need a 6 volt starter for 6 volts IT WILL TURN THE SAME DIRECTION REGARDLESS OF BATTERY POLARITY

Thanks for the info, one more question. Is there anyway to tell if your generator is set up for positive ground or do you just have to take it to a shop?

Generators are really dumb. They don't know if they are for negative or positive ground. You have to tell them. Just follow John T's instructions for polarizing and you generator will get the hint.

YOURE WELCOME, A typical Generator can charge at EITHER Polarity.......The shop cant do anything you cant do yourself, its how you POLARIZE it that imparts a degree of residual permanent magnetism in the soft iron field poles around which the fields are wound that determines its polarity.. Just as Electrical polarity is + or - Magnetic field polarity can be North or South
and its orientation likewise affects the polarity of the voltage induced if you pass a coil of wire through it or the magnetic field passes by the coil of wire.......

Fun analogy Owen,,,,,and likewise they are "dumb" as far as what their output voltage should be, its increased if you spin the genny faster and/or pump more current throught its field windings which increases the magnetic field strength inside which the armature rotates

Life is good, generators are indeed obedient

Go Zeke has it wrong. Check your coil. Does it have a resistor wired to it? If so, it is a 6 volt coil and you can use it if you take out the resistor. No resistor, then you will need to get a 6 volt coil. Check the polarity of the coil as John T stated. You will need a 6 volt regulator. Don't worry about the pos or neg regulator but be sure you do not get a Ford regulator, they use a different way to regulate the field. The starter may still be a 6 volt starter that was run on 12 volts. If the starter turns very fast on 12 volts it is likely a 6 volt starter and you can use it as is. Poloarize the gen like John T said not what Go Zeke said. Replace the light bulbs to 6 volt.
