Just Another Old Tractor

Two weeks ago Nancy and I drove down to Waxahatchie, TX to look at a '53 JD Model 70 gas tractor.

This one is in his "work clothes" and is the cleanest tractor we've ever bought.

Changed out all the fluids and adjusted the clutch.

Still needs a little work on the brakes.

On the battery box there is a Tire Inflation Pressures decal; first time I've ever seen one of these.

The tractor runs good and will probably be used to power our log splitter this winter.

If you've got a couple of minutes, take an early morning short ride on the latest addition to our JD relics.

Very nice, I also just picked up my new tractor a 1956 john deere 60 with ROM, baker valve, power steering, factory tach and even a cig lighter!

Gotta love the thrill of a new tractor

4 spoke steering wheel, manual steering I assume. Hope there's no calcium in the tires, don't know if that rust is bad on those rims. I think it's been painted before probably 30 years ago.

Regardless of its looks, sounds like a tight tractor.

Yes the big, 4 spoke steering wheel is for manual steering; however, the nose came off of a donor tractor that did have power steering.

No calcium in the tires.

Yes it was painted with a brush; you can still see some of the brush strokes.

Sounds like you got yourself a "dressed out" Model 60.

Yes it's always a good feeling to add another tractor to the "work group"; never know when you'll need a backup.

We have another '53 Model 70 Gas named "15" based on the serial number.

We decided to name this newer '53 Model 70 Gas "1011" based on its serial number.

Don't have any work being done by "1011" our newest '53 Model 70 Gas tractor.

Have several videos of "15" our other '53 Model 70 Gas tractor workin' for his keep.

Hope you enjoy the show!

You've got that right.

When we stopped to fill the Dodge on Friday night, we also filled this tractor.

If memory serves me, it has a 22 gallon tank.

It topped off at 21.5 gallons at $50.00.

Changing all the fluids was also somewhat expensive.

yea, it really is a joy all the cool add ons it has really does make it a joy. Abig thanks to Vito on this forum for the deal!

Sorry about that; I"m using Nancy"s computer.

Hope [b:654c4848f0]Joe Dan[/b:654c4848f0] aka [b:654c4848f0]go zeke[/b:654c4848f0] doesn"t see this; he"ll be calling me all sorts of long, ugly names.

Thanks for the compliment on our tractor.

You are exactly right; it is a "hobby farm".

We grow Coastal/Cheyenne Bermuda hay for Nancy's horses.

We sell the Bahia grass round bales for cattle.

Sold out last Bahia bales on Sunday; have some on the ground to be raked and baled this Saturday.

Hopefully the rain will hold off through next weekend.

Sorry about that [b:654c4848f0]Vito[/b:654c4848f0]; did not mean my last reply for you.

I was not in any way referring to you.

My sincerest apology to you.

Hope you will forgive me.

James and Nancy,
I'm gald you are happy with the tractor.. and will put it to good use.. As you could see, I just haven't used the tractor much in the last few years.. (and the trans fuild showed it, it had to sit outside for a yr or so until we found the place we are in now.. )

Nancy, the battery box came off another 70.. I bought the box somewhere in the past 10-12 yrs... (the orginal was really bad.) I have had some/or all of the rims and tires apart.. (I don't remember which tubes are in it now..) the left rear is off the first G we ever bought.. ( must have been in 91 or 92) I think the right back might have been the tire that was on it when I bought the tractor. (can't remember if I've had it apart.) the front left tire (the two rib) has some memories... It was on my Grandfathers 70 wide front.. I can remember has a kid ride rounds cutting hay with it.. wondering why the fronts didn't match.. I think the right front might have been on it when I bought the tractor..

If you ever take that alternator off.. I'd be glad to take it back.. haha.. Justkidding.. but if I had to buy it would be in the $3-400 range... I think its off a 50-60 series JD.. (that would be the 4450-4960 series.. haha.) It's well over a 100Amp alternator..

Good Luck with the Tractor..

Drove it around the farm on a short tour early Saturday morning.

Drove it around the tractor shed a couple of times while flushing the crankcase and transmission.

Flushed the PTO with diesel and filled with 10wt oil.

Engaged the PTO and drove it over to the hayfield and back; PTO shaft was just barely warm when I got back to the tractor shed.

Will probably work on the grease fittings and clean the radiator this coming weekend.

We sure do like the tractor.

I hope not.. but If you had to flush the PTO housing again, it might be leaking in from the Rear axle housing.. I also drained it and flushed it.. (I have a tank that I fill with diesel, and then hook the tank to compressed air and it sprays out under pressure.. ) I then ran it for a while.. checked it the next day, and the oil was as clean as I wanted (the level looked about the same, thought I didn't get all the diesel out.) so I changed it again.. (This was before you picked up the tractor.) But if you got the fuild right in the rearend, that should help..
I'll have to find some old pictures of the tractor...
