Second Cutting

Just a couple of videos of the second cutting of our hay meadow.

"Vernon" our '56 Model 70 gas tractor is the designated mowing tractor equipped with "Nelson" our refurbished JD 350 sickle mower.

"Sam" our '51 MT is the designated raking tractor pulling our refurbished JD 640 hay rake.

Made 30 Coastal/Cheyenne Bermuda 4x4 bales on this cutting.

Hey James,

You post some of the coolest stuff, but how the heck do you keep all the names of your tractors and equipment straight??

I only have two boys and half the times call them by the wrong name :)

Tractor names come from something particular to that tractor. A part of the serial number, where we got it, or a characteristic of that particular tractor. For instance, the JD 70 we call 'Vernon' got that name because we bought him in Mt. Vernon.

The JD 48 A we call "old John" got his name because we've had him the longest.

Sparky, the 51 M that was my 20th anniversary present, got his name because if you shut him down by turning off the gas, you may get a spark out the exhaust.

The serial number of another of our JD 70's ends with 15, so his name is "15".

Its just what seems appropriate to us for that tractor.

Knock on wood: so far have not called my favorite wife, Nancy, by the wrong name.

Knock on wood: so far the former wife, Wicked Witch of the East, has not called me in over 10 years.

No mistakin' her for any body; about time to send her a new broom for Halloween.

Glad you like our videos; we like sharing them with everyone on the YT forum.

Not brave enough at this point to video the baling process live from the tractor seat; stay pretty busy hanging on to my hat and avoiding pine trees.

Cut some Bahia grass yesterday so maybe the first baling video next Saturday.

Nancy answered your question about naming the tractors and equipment.

Hey James and Nancy looks like you have your equipment workin just right. Neat to see that hay getting flipped like that. Just wondering how long after you cut that you were able to rake? Have a good one.

This was cut on a Saturday morning around 10-10:30am just after the dew evaporated.

This was raked on the following Monday just after the dew was off.

Sure made some nice hay.
