Craigslist has become the online trading venue of choice, IMO. I know lots of people that used to surf Ebay regularly (myself included) who find Craigslist to be better as the sellers/buyers are usually local. Also, Ebay made changes that make it less attractive to use.

I used to get on ebay a couple times a day. Now a couple times a month. Just not spending as much money. Do look at craigslist a couple times per day.

I was going to ask this or post it. Have a freind who sells/buys on there. Seems like there is little offered for sale (except run of the mill) and selling prices are down. Locally craigs list is a joke. (just geographically)

Have not bought since paypal is the only way to pay for items.Nov 08 was my last buy.My shop is very slow now.Even when I bought a lot snipe bidders were trouble.I used to buy fired shot shells and resell in my shop.EBAY shoots themselves in the foot often.

For me it started with all of the changes they made. Used to be Ebay was individuals selling things and you could get some good deals. Then it got to where there were so many businesses getting involved, people setting up Ebay businesses, etc that the prices weren't so low anymore. Add to that the searches that used to turn up what you looked for now turning up 500 things you weren't looking for because some business wanted to advertise their stuff to you whether you wanted it or not and it became more unattrative. Then add on the whole Pay Pal payment scheme and I'd rather just buy local or do without as I had to deal with the whole mess.

Like others have said for me the time I used to spend on Ebay now gets spent on CraigsList looking for the things I do happen to need locally. Not to mention they have a "free" section and you can't imagine the stuff people are looking to get rid of just for your time to go get it. I've missed some great free deals on there so far, but my day will come....

Another venue many people overlook is their states Agricultural Review, or whatever you state calls it if they have one. In NC ours has the relevent info to the farming community as well as classified sections for alot of different things from Bee keeping supplies, animals for sale or wanted, tractors, trucks, trailers for sale or wanted, etc etc. Like any other classifieds it's always worth a look.

Probably the biggest one thing is their Paypal Only policy. Also they have raised fees for sellers to the point it costs too much to sell there.Greed will get catch up with you every time

I sold on ebay for over 5 years and when they forced the sellers to accept Pay-Pal, I quit selling.
Sellers are not allowed to say that they accept Money Orders and Checks in their listings. However, as a buyer, if you e-mail the seller and ask if they will accept money orders and checks, they will reply either yes or no. You can then pay, based in their answer. Most sellers will say yes. I just bought from 3 sellers and paid with money orders.

If you do get the OK from a seller to pay with a check or money order, be sure to ask the seller for the STREET psrt of his adderss. When an item is sold, Ebay gives the buyer the sellers name, city, state and zip code, but now leaves out the house number and street part of the address.

I don't mind Pay-Pal..use a small account for them.
But the big thing I notice is the size of each listing. Most listing are now 3 pages or so in length. Filled with E-bay advertising and such. Bugs me with DSL, so I don't know how any one with dial up could wait to see it all. If the dial up people have given up looking cause it takes too long, could explain a lot of what you see.

"Have not bought since paypal is the only way to pay for items"

Most sellers will still accept a MO or cash if you ask them ahead of time. I just sold a $800 item on ebay and the seller wanted to know if he could send me a MO. I said sure in a NY minute as I just saved 4% in paypal fees.

Another guy drove to my house to pick up the item and paid me in cash for a $350 item. I love cash.

Its the economy plus ebay got greedy.I'm sure not buying like I used too.As for Paypal its been great for me as a buyer but maybe its not so great for a seller. When I used to pay by check it took 3 weeks to get the item, now its 3-4 days.

While we are at it; Is there any way to make sellers say if they are shipping USPO or truck?
At my town, and many places, PO does not deliver to home- small towns and new divisions, must have box number. Try putting a box number in your address and UPS comes uncorked. With only the street address, unless the sorter at the PO knows your name it, get lost when no box number.

My Ebay purchasing slowed greatly when they started hiding the moniker/identity of the bidders. I like to be able to see if I have bid against the person in prior auctions from which I may know their bidding patterns. A sniper, etc.

They also changed the site so that one must now have Java Script turned on in order to navigate to multi-page listings. Didn't used to be that way and I despise Java Script and all of the ---that comes along with it such as ads pop ups, etc.

And what is the deal with Ebay having advertisements on it---like they aren't making enough money as is.

Also the trend away from auctions to stores and Buy it Now listings.

Agree with you for the most part greenbeanman.
Except I use the "buy it now" a lot. Hard for me to get around and I buy a lot from E-bay and don't want to wait to bid on it. I do think that they should limit a seller from listing the same thing more than like 3 times. Some seller blanket the search with the same item 20 or 30 times.
Since I buy this way, Pay-Pal is my number one way to pay. I Get it in 4 or 5 days instead of 2 weeks and a trip to the bank or PO to get a MO. Only time I ever had a problem with my credit card was from giving it to a E-bay seller.

I also have gotten to the point I might cancel my ebay account. I recently listed items and am tired of paypal fees. In my auctions I said that the winner would have to add 3% to offset the cost of using paypal, which you have to accept. My listings were pulled and told I was in violation of ebay policy. That I was trying to circumvent charges. If you think about it I was not because I would still have to pay the fees for paypal. Most people just raise their shipping costs to offset the fees. Getting to the point, I hardly use it at all anymore.Fees, fees and more fees.

I can understand why a seller may not like paypal, but I am curious why a buyer would not like it. It is quick and simple, and if you have a problem paypal will help-maybe to the point the seller gets the short end of the deal. I have a separate checking account linked to my paypal, and only put enough into it to cover my purchases, so potential fraud is very limited-what am I missing?

Ebay is getting greedy. Now they are changing how they handle shipping insurance. The seller can no longer offer insurance as an option. The SELLER is responsible for the package the whole way to the buyers door. Sellers are supposed to roll in the price of insurance into the item cost or the shipping cost. How are you supposed to do that if you are auctioning the item? Insurance cost is based on the value of the item, but you dont know what the value of it is till it gets sold. Suppose you guess, and add the cost into the shipping, then the item sells for a lot less than you thought. The buyer is going to be mad that he has to pay this high shipping/insurance cost. I cant wait for someone to step up and open a site that can give ebay a run for their money...

I don't think there fees are unreasonable compared to a suitable newspaper ad or a live auction. And if a buisness you stiLL PAY CREDICARD FEES. They need rules and have to update them as things change. I can't imagine buying an object and getting a M/O for a few dollars?? I don't think its there fault that the economy crashed and nothing is imune.

I've hardly gone there since they did the paypal only thing. Seems to be a closed loop, ebay owns everything, skims off the top of everything, & doesn't care too much about buyers or sellers.

I think craigslist has taken a lot of traffic from them as well.

"I don't think there fees are unreasonable compared to a suitable newspaper ad or a live auction."

I just sold a set of $800 wheels- total fees with paypal was just over $80-that is outrageous.

"Most people just raise their shipping costs to offset the fees."

If you raise the shipping fees, the buyers hit you with a bad negative or hit you negatively with that new scoring system that only favors the buyer.

The recession is not over, economy sucks, ebay sucks, paypal sucks...... Get use to the new world order change it"s going to get worse before better.

Well maybe you can't 'imagine' it but I used to do it all the time get a MO because I don't want a Paypal Account.'The Customer Is King' is the creed of SUCCESSFUL businesses.Paypal cost too you know.

I've sold recently on ebay, you don't have to use paypal. It my adds i say no paypal.

I just talked to a local auctioneer about selling some of my Dad's equipment, He gets 30% on the cheap stuff, 20% on the middle range, and 10% on the expensive stuff. I don't remember the exact break points so I don't know if he would have charged you 10% or 20%. So it sounds like eBay was about the same as a live auction.
