Balers.. Tips from a local salesman...

Didn't go to the dealer to look yet. Figured my time would be better spent to first pour a couple of beers down a neighbor's throat who is a salesman at the local case/IH dealer. He told me to figure to pay 400-600 bucks more in the local area because small balers are not common and transport from other areas would be at least 300 for minimum distance. Not much working on prices I guess. He's gonna look at the balers the other dealer has and see if they are worth the asking price and try to get a feel for how much I can haggle (he's in the same oldtimer tractor club as the owner of the other dealership). Older I get, the less stress I like.... What I've seen on ebay is interesting balers going for around 1300-1500 bucks. Asking price locally for the same model is 1800... Kind of a no brainer............. One tip the guy gave me... Not to buy anything from a dealer that they don't have their sticker on as a future advertisement. Also said that if it had the sticker (which says they'll stand behind it), I could possibly knock 30% or so from the price if I'd tell them to remove the sticker and sell it to me as/is and not look back.

We'll see.

What brand of baler are you looking for and what shape is the baler in that you can buy one for around 1300-1500?
Maybe I need to sell mine if they are going for that price.
Are you still across the big pond?

Yea, still here. You folks are telling me NH and I like the looks (small size) of a 268 I found, but it's asking price is 900 bucks, but another 5-600 for transport (or I rent a trailer big enough and take a 1400km road trip to Holland). Local dealer tells me to go with Welger or Claas for parts availability. Welgers are going the last few days from 1k for a late 50's to early 60's model to 15 or so for more modern (70-early 90's) Local guy wants 18 for a decent welger that they'll stand behind (not sure how far behind  ) . Found a claas that I like real well by the looks of the pics for 1800. Guess I'll see what the close dealer has to offer (put my hands all over them so I can get an idea of what to look for), put an ad in the papers within 60 miles or so to see what turns up, then make a decision. If I lived a couple hundred or so miles North, would be no problem. The beer in Southern Germany is better though  .

Here in the states I'd stick with New Holland. If Class and Welger are the dominiant balers in Germany, that is probably they way to go.

Dave , You are doing good getting the inside imfo before going in . Not alot of people buying balers right now so they likely ar nt going anywhere . Show your interested then let them call you , Middle of the winter he may give you a good deal . They like to empty the lot at tax time and sometimes when it s slow they just need to make payroll or pay the Ins. Just stop in once in awhile and buy some oil so they know your still there .
