O/T question for hog farmers

A shorter answer could be given for, is there any feed that hogs DON"T find irresistible. I raised hogs back when a small farmer could still make a little money with hogs. I found that soured corn was a favorite of my hogs.

We used to pour water in a barrel of barley and let it soak for a few days, then feed it to the hogs. The folks said the soaking would make it swell before it entered their digestive system, and would prevent the problems that could arise if they ate it dry.

They would go crazy over it. I always thought it kinda made them drunk. . .

You had to be careful and not get any of the wet barley on your hands - the smell would NOT wash off.

The racing pigs from Galt, Ca are trained with soft serve ice cream and Oreo cookies. After they get to big to race the trainer says that it takes a long time for them to get off the sauce and on a regular feeding schedule.

As far as natural food is concerned they love pigweed and its just as well as it is a pest weed, especially in soybeans

you wouldnt be trying to feed or trap ferals, would ya???
theyre getting smarter...i useta use corn soaked in diesel for bait [kept deer and coons away from corn] but last couple years havent been able to get hogs in trap.
i've tried to feed out ferals before and havent had much luck...trick is to starve em and then throw feed in...if they eat keep feedin em...the truly wild ones will never eat again in captivity...anything over 200# i feed to buzzards anyhow...cant get that feral taste out of the big ones.

years ago when we still farmed west Galveston Island my mom worked for Falstaff Brewery...about once a month a big tanker would dump a load of used malt on pastures...we'd turn hogs in there for awhile...they loved it.

I have a potbelly out here that goes nuts for apples she'll dig through what ever is in with the feed to get them out first and make the funniest noises the whole time.

Nancy, I am by no measure a hog farmer, but I do have a "foster pig" while my uncle does not have a place for him. He will eat any thing but the only things I can hold over his head a really make him dance are ears of sweet corn out of the garden that have gotten too hard or a tomato. If you have feral pigs, I hope you catch or kill every one.

I have used "old" bread from the local bakery outlet with good results for my hogs. It is not expensive but has a lot of nutritional value.

Snakes ! They love to eat snakes. When we were kids my cousin and I would spend all day catching any snakes we could find and them feeding them to grandpas hogs. Rattlers, Bull, Garter, the hogs ate them all. It was kinda like watching a kid slurp down a spagetti noodle.
