Best way to disable a tractor

Ive been trying to think of good ways to disable my tractor, actually any tractor for that matter as one of the condtions where i store it is that it can be put outside during the fall(which i love doing) and be decorated, but events that have happened latly that have me thinking twice about how to disable it so far ive just removed to coil wire

1 Chain through the rear tires or rims and through the draw bar( but im thinking it may damage it if someone does get it started,

2 Take the battery( however it does have a magneto

3 turn the gas off but how hard is that to figure out

If anyone has an easyier way please do share as i really enjoy seeing my tractor all nice and decorated but i would hate to see it get stolen

any input besides dont put it out?

Removal all the spark plug wire and the coil wire. And put a large tire chuck on the back tires so it wont roll away by accident.

remove rotor from distribitor. place ground on points.

on diesel, adjust the kill cable so its got the fuel cut off all the time.

however lots of folks just want to load it on a trailer even if its by cranking the starter, to move it. so a chain around the rear tires in a way that it cuts the driver in half, is a better ideal..

Labor intensive, but not very costly:

Take some vacuum tubing that is used in the automotive field and make it to look like spark plug wires. Complete each end of the wire with the metal spark plug/distributor cap connectors and it will take a thief a long time to figure out why there is no spark jumping from the cap to the end of the plug "wire".
Of course, this doesn't work too well if all your wires snake through a metal tube.

If it is near the road, they can have it on a rollback in a matter of minutes. Around here, there is a strong suspicion that many of the auto thefts are done by the Repo tow trucks and rollbacks.

It will cost some money (500 bucks one time fee) and get lowjack put on it. Then if it does dissapear it can be found fairly quickly. They can put lowjack on anything these days.

Kruse, vacuum tubing conducts electricity. I've won plenty of lunch money by betting people I can make an engine run with no coil wire. If none of the tubing touches the block or any other line, the engine will run fine.

thanks guys, Iam kind of arfraid of the trailer/rollback option to, but i supose the chain threw the back tires is my best bet

For a gasoline engine, the easiest and most effective way to disable it is to scramble the spark plug wires. Even if thieves figure out what you've done, most will not have the patience to straighten it out.

If you cross the spark plug wires, whoever shows up with a busted wrist will be the guilty party. Bernie Steffen

the best way to protect it is to not put it out there in the first place, if you like a lit tractor for christmas time and hollidays buy you a junker of your favorite model, paint it nice and drag it out there it will look the same and if they swipe that the jokes on them lol

The problem is i dont think they would support me havin a junk tractor in the yard, its my aunts house being that im only 18

Run the carb out of fuel, drain the fuel tank and remove the sediment bowl, disconnect the battery, remove one wheel, let the air out of the front tires.
If they steal it after all that they want it more than you!
Actually I do or have done all the things I listed and so far no problems...Knock on wood!!!

Removing the rotor, and putting a rubber hose in the place of the coil wire is a sure no start.
Chain one rear wheel to one front wheel (looks better) JimN

If they steal it after after all that,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,At least you will have enough parts to get you started building another tractor

Put a sign on it that says: "For Sale, Tractor external_link sat on during campaign photo op. Ready to Work"

First, no nnalert would sit on it, let alone steal it. Eliminates 50% of potential thieves.
Second, no nnalert would steal it due to the second sentence of the ad. Eliminates other 50% of potential thieves.

Please don"t rely on a chain: bolt cutters, battery sawzall, mini-torch plus other options and that chain and lock are off in seconds and it is on its way onto a roll back or a trailer with a winch. When you figure out a way to stop a thief, the honest world will thank you.

Why not just crank up the adjusters on the foot brakes so they can't release? Whether the engine runs or not the big wheels won't turn. And it won't cooperate for the lighter-duty electric winches either. I'm not too experienced with the way it works but I think that I could make that happen on my 560 in about 5 minutes with just a good-sized wrench and a deep well socket.

Personally I'd expect that rather than give your tractor a free brake job, would-be thieves would be more interested in finding an easier target.
