copper washers/seals??

For the block type (banjo??) fittings on Hydraulic lines, injector lines, etc. Is there something better than copper? I just can't get rid of oil seeps and a small diesel drip with these things (even with new ones). Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks, Dave

You may have a tiny crack in one of the fittings that is very hard to see or maybe impossible to see. New copper gaskets usually fix the leak. Little leaks like that can drive you nuts. Just an thought.

Is there perhaps an old one in there masquerading as part of the fitting. By the time a good one gets compressed properly and expands and has all the rings pressed into it, it can look as if it's part of the fixture instead of a crush gasket. They WILL hide on you, just like the flat o-ring in the groove on an old Farmall filter base.)

It takes the harder bronze or steel of the fixture to press those rings into the face of the gasket/washer/seal. The soft copper of an old one stuck in there will not be hard enough to press the rings into the face of the new gasket and make a good seal.

Scratch a little with a pick or awl and see if it shows copper. If so, I'm betting that's your problem.

Nothing stuck. But now, the rest of the story...

Ordered an assortment from Harbor Freight when I got them, they said electric connections on them. Looked and felt like the ones I took off. Is there different ones for what I need? If so, can someone send me a link to what I need from an online source?

Thanks,

Dave

Try Mcmaster Carr's online catalog on page 3196. They have the washers with the rubber seal ring bonded to the inner diameter that are commonly used nowdays to replace copper washers. I've seen them used in applications sealing upwards of 800 psi without leaking.

Knowing Harbor Fright I bet the are not solid copper. Probably copper plated or even paint!
NAPA carries an assortment of them as do some hardware stores.

Remove the copper washers, anneal by heating with a torch until the are a very pretty coppery color and dropping into cold water then reinstall. This should stop most of your leaks. The washer have work hardened over time and need softening.
