Nashville down through Chattanooga, to Adairsville, GA: I am a flatland guy, ok I'm a sissy when it comes to mountain driving. This area is pretty hairy, isn't it?

not that bad .. made the trip 8 times in the last 2 years ..all seasons .... if you are not sure, do it during daylight and enjoy the view

Also check the water levels along 75 .. a lot of rain and flooding problems

I dont think it is, but I guess it depends on what you are driving and what you are used to. Its nothing like being out west. I 75 doesnt go through Nashville though, thats I 65 for a main N/S route. I 75 connects Knoxville to Chatanooga and south to Atlanta. North it connects Knoxville to Lexington, KY. If you are coming accross from Nashville to Knoxville on I 40 thats good road and then south on I 75 to me is the best of the mountain part. To me the worst run is from Jellico Mountain on the KY TN line south to Knoxville.

I believe you will find that I 75 is an easy road to drive. Of course it is 4 lane, separated, and sometimes more. if you are going through Atlanta, do not take the 285 system. Stay on 75 and go straight thru Atlanta preferably between 10 and 4 on week days. We go there often since we are close. Henry

better back that up to about 3:00 in the evening because many people start to crowd the road about 3:30 if you want smooth sailing. But it only takes one idiot to ruin it all

Nashville to Chattanooga has Mounteagle mountain. Its steep with 45 mph curves.Tests your brakes in a big truck without a Jake brake.Car wouldnt be too bad.The rest is not bad.Knoxville to Chattanooga is easier maybe, but its a long ways out of the way.Lots shorter from Nashville to Chattanooga than Nashville to Knoxville then Chattanooga.Depends if you are sightseeing or trying to get somewhere.

Are you just timid, or are you going to haul a tractor or something..??
If you could drive down Jellico with your load, you won't have any trouble anywhere else between Choo-Choo and Knoxville..

If you have a good load (and you MUST have trailer brakes), start down your hill starting over the top at reduced speed..maybe as low as 20 MPH and control the speed..increasing the speed to 55 by the time you get to the bottom..
NEVER start down with already "Hot" brakes..
If you know the road, you won't be using your brakes nearly as hard as if you don't.

Some places even require you to Stop at the top of the hill..(Mt College, Pa), and there is a town at the bottom of the hill (20 MPH)...!!!!
That can be "fun" without a "Jake"..!!
I ran to San Bernadino, Ca. for 10 years before we got any Jakes or power steering (From the "Queen City"..Cincinnati)..36 hrs out, 35 hrs back..Max-Gross..50 times a year..

Ron..

If you're lookin for a good mountain ride, take I-40 from I-81 in Tenn. to Ashville, NC. Heck of a lot of curves, but I bet it looks beautiful in fall colors.

slim,

Not trying to be a wise-guy here, but I-75 doesn't go from Nashville to Chattanooga. However, I-24 does. Monteagle is the long, down-hill run between Nashville & Chattanooga. It was spooky about 20 years ago, but it's a piece of cake today. It's four lanes with guardrails. Observe the speed limit and there's nothing to it.

Have fun traveling.

It sounds like you are going to be empty going east and loaded going west.
Mounteagle use to be pretty hairy going east years ago but since they moved the east bound to the other side of the mountain it is not so bad.

Both sides are about 6% but they are long grades.

Just take your time; make sure your brakes are adjusted properly and you should not have any problems.
Crossing Mounteagle is the only spot you would have to watch between Nashville and Atlanta.

It"s not that bad. Once you get through Chattanooga, you find easy driving. Only one congested area south of Chattanooga, Dalton Ga. you should be okay there also if it"s not around 4-6 p.m. lots of carpet mill folks trying to get home. By the way, I only live about 15 miles southwest of Adairsville. A little town called Taylorsville, folks around here just chose someones name and added a "ville to it. When I worked for the Fire Dept. I spent about a one year stint at the Station in Adairsville, good folks around there.. Hope you have a safe trip and look around a little while you are here lots of history. Glad to have you in our little part of the world.
