Kids on Garden tractors part 2

Guys, just wanted to make it clear that i'm talking about kids between 5 and 9 or 11 bouncing around straight pipe mowers and 4 wheelers and such at a ridiculous speed.

BTW, Are straight pipes absolutely necessary? I wear hearing aids even now!

Not talking about the folks who can't get around without a garden tractor or cart.

And yes, this was the Arcadia show, a mighty fine show without all the little punks banging crap around.

I'm NOT ranting or really upset at anything, i'm just seeing a lack of parental control policies.

I'm sure if this was back in the '40s, parents would whip children for running around like wild monkeys.

It's just one of those lil pet peeves.

Oh well.

By the way, if ALL KIDS were like 630rich's child gently driving on his 140JD, that would be perfect for everyone. But yeah, I guess not every kid is RESPECTFUL

I have the same feeling about adults on their full size tractors with a straight pipe instead of a muffler,I'm deaf enough already with them not adding to it,just one of my pet peeves. Bill M.
ps. I always try to wear hearing protectors whenever running any piece of equipment.

Yes there are many good kids but the obnoxious ones really spoil it for all. It's a shame parents do not monitor AND correct their childerns behavior. At our events on several occasions we have had kids climb out on the hoods of tractors while the parents stood and watched. What is this country coming to?

Im only 18 so I dont know if im considered one of those kids but I never operate equipment near anyone in fact if someone is walking near me when im leaving the show or driving back and forth to the pulling ring I stop and let them pass, to many deaths and accidents that can be avoided but I am guilty of starting the tractor for a patron to hear it run and i do have a stright pipe for shows

We have the same concerns about kids on tractors at the K&O show here in Winfield. Not sure of the age, but all kids driving tractors lawn mowers or??? have to take a driver safety course before they are allowed to operate equipment of any kind. This has been our policy for many years. This was not popular at first but people have accepted it. The club feels it has improved our show. We also impose a speed limit on all tractors.

Sometimes it is tough to police this and a few get out of hand but we have much less trouble than in the past.

It does take a person that is dedicated to teach the kids safety.

dont be afraid to stop them, an tell them to slow it down or you will take the key, an only give it back to the parent or guardian. i have stopped seveal kids an told them to slow it down then let it be known that they have been talked to. it usually will get back to the right person an it doesnt happen again, except one time.
that one i i walked up an took the key out of the golfcart when i seen he was stopped, told him he could go tell his grandfather, an he could come an get the key. after a quite awhile he did show up an get the key an said it will not happen again an thanked me.
kids will be kids an they dont act the same when the guardian is around.
its better to nip it in the butt then someone get hurt an a stranger telling them to slow it down sometimes means more then someone they have to listen to all the time.
just my 2 cents worth

If it were back in the 1940's the kids would have more sense, and for the straight pipes yes that is sad, I see parents taking their 1 & 2 year old children riding on lawn mowers. The young childrens' hearing is so sensitive at that age and can be damaged in seconds.

I broke my son in wearing earplugs when he was old enough to run the riding lawn mower and now he always asks for ear plugs before going out to mow the lawn. He is 14 now.

When any of use the weed eater we use eye and ear protection. My wife likes safety glasses, but I prefere a face shield over the glasses.

THERE'S NO SECOND CHANCE WITH YOUR HEARING OR SIGHT!!!

Some of the shows in my area have set guide lines
No ATV's
All golf carts, riding mowers, utility vehicles must register
Fee $10
Receive copy of rules
No operater under 16 years of age.

Some of the older operaters need to stop looking while driving

Rob,, you sure got that right,,, kids back in the 40's and 50's got wiped for just crying,
I'm sure there where parents back then who where easy on kids, but those kids are now behind bars, and doing time for the time they lost being wiped,

I see it all the time,,, kids doing bad things, and getting put in jail,,
I did at one time, work in a reformatory, and I can't tell you how those where treated for doing wrong,,, it was interesting job for me when I was younger,,

I understand what you are saying. But it's not just kids. I've got a real life example. My youngest daughter went to a summer youth camp. It was set on a small college campus and was extremely crowded. They rented golf carts there (money maker). They were only supposed to rent to adults who were supposed to adhere to strict guidelines one was a maximum of 4 per golf cart.

Well my daughter was run over by a woman who was so overloaded that she couldn't pay attention to where she was going. Not only did she run over my daughter but she backed up and ran over her again. Then she said something like you look ok and proceeded to leave. Fortunately one of the chaperones saw what happened and ran her down and gave her a good chewing out. But the woman still didn't really get it because it was only an accident.

dhermesc,, yes,,,, and it's all on what you eat, and they eat junk foods and drink pop,,,

and they wonder why there FAT,,,, I laugh at them all the time,,, dumb as a box of rocks,,

I'd like to know how long folks would tolerate golf carts and 4 wheelers and lawn mowers being driven down the sidewalks in their town, community, village....or any other place, meant for foot travel?

These public events...tractor shows, car shows, airplane fly in's, etc., were never conceived as drive by viewing parades. People on foot and folks on/in any kind of motorized vehicle, don't mix.

Of course those who can't or won't walk, don't like hearing this. Like any other special interest group, they want exceptions made just for them.

So, what is the answer? When I was a boy and grandmaw and grandpaw went to the county fair....which was probably the closet thing to a tractor show we now have, they walked around until they tuckered out. They found a place to sit down and visit with their cronies.....or they went home. They didn't make a nuisance out of themselves, expecting everybody else to clear the way so they could motor through the crowd.

There is no common sense amongst today's generations....old and young alike. They all want what's good for them and to hell with everybody else.

I've got a bum knee and a bad back...they both hurt all the time. BUT, that is MY problem, not anybody else's and I have no right to expect the public at large to make an exception for me, for my convenience. Neither does anybody else.

There should be a sign posted at the gates of these events stating: This is a Walking Event ONLY.

Mark, with better than 8,000 posts, you should know that common sense has NO place in these forums. :>))

Where the heck did you come up with THAT statement???
=================================================

The fact that people have to RIDE a garden tractor or a 4 wheeler around instead of walking gives a good indication of their current and future physical well being.

Glad to here you will never get old or have joint problems. That will save healthcare money for those of us that have paid in and DO need it!
The original poster does not have any problems with those with disabilities using assistance. Neither do I and neither should you or anyone as long as they are being courtious and safe. The issue is with KIDs (of all ages) that are misbehaving and operating machines in an unsafe manner.
What obesity has to do with THAT I do not understand. There are PLENTY of skinny little a holes running around too!!
