OT:lowering a newer 4WD pickup?

Does anyone know of a website that discusses the pro/cons of lowering a 4WD pickup so as to make it easier for an older/disabled person to enter/exit said vehicle? Has anyone done it? I don't understand the logic of having pickups so high off ground when differential housing isn't any higher.

IMHO when 3rd member drags high center the pickup is STUCK unless one adds monster mudder tires.
Thanks for any ideas,Jim

I know it can be done, just don't know much info about it. I know there is a local body shop that specializes in truck accessories and customization that does lowers and lifts on alot of truck.

What I don't get about the newer trucks is why they build the beds so dang tall. My brother bought a 04 F150 2wd new. The first thing I noticed when he brougt it home was how tall the bed was. I am 5'10" and I have to hop on the tire or bumper to get anything out of the bottom of the bed. I thought at the time "this is a fad that won't last". Wrong, they have all gotten taller it seems since.

I call it the "look at me and my truck" syndrome. I doubt most trucks are used to haul much. The TALL bed thing has perplexed me for some time.

make the beds tall so they can sell the rear fold down step in the tailgate.

they don't make a true work truck anymore, all the gingerbread is for weekenders and soccer moms. I still can't figure out why mommy needs an F 350 powerstroke to haul the rugrats to town.

Cause todays kids are obese compared to prior generations

What kind of truck do you have Jim? Has it been modified (raised)? Might be as easy as reversing the modification. You could probably google the vehicle and "lowering kit" to get some ideas.

I know quite a few guys who drive 3/4 and 1 tons as daily drivers. Some have tonneau covers, some might be used to tow a 5th wheel a couple times per year. Some have them all tricked out and have never used the bed. It ain't all girls!!! I seldom see anybody with anything in the bed.

I call it the "My weiner"s bigger than your"s" syndrome.

These folks go buy 3/4 and 1 ton diesel trucks, flip their cap"s around backwards, yank off the muffler, ride the jake brake and play Billy Bob Bonzo.

It"s for braggin" rights down at the feed mill, the county fair or where they work or loaf. It"s not about needing them.....it"s about projecting some image.

I bought a chev because it set lower than other models . But still have to use running boards . I would reccomend a good set of running boards not the tube type as they let all the dirt & water on road through.

I am 5'7" and need a truck I can work out of. Even the Colorado ZR1 or whatever they call them are too tall to reach over the tailgate. I got a regular 4 door, love it....James

Check out the current issue of FarmShow magazine- guy makes a tailgate mounted step that folds out when you open the tailgate. Over-priced at $495, but so simple, a caveman could copy it.

Four wheeler or diesel power magizines. I recall a recient artical about a lowered truck in one of them in the last few months, Sorry i can't lay my hands on that articale now. It should be searchable online. If you cant lower it, several companys make full length (wheel to wheel) 4 inch drop running boards. Carr also makes a nice bolt on step. search online.

Hi Jim,

I was in getting some warranty work on my 02 F350 DRW CC when a broad came in with one raised 12". She opened her door, a series of electric steps deployed automatically. She was all of 4ft-6" :)

I asked her how much, $200eh/door installed, and she said they came in "easy" steps or steps with a 5" rise as her father had bought them. A local custom shop.

I use my F350 4x4 in the deep Colorado Rockies and have high centered in the cab going over moguls because of my length. My diff's never touched. First time in 50yrs that I had to back out and look for another way to get there.

how about electric motor home steps? could probably be wire to the dome light swith on the door to lower when the door is opened....

I have a step that goes in the Reese hitch socket. When not in use you can swing it in under the truck. Works for me.

Nothing that can't be done. In the rear you can get shorter lift blocks or get the springs de-arched in a big press at a spring shop. Same for the front. If it has coil springs, cut off a coil or buy shorter springs.

For someone getting in and out all day, it is nice for it to be easier!

Has anyone ever tried an airbag suspension? Flip a switch to lower the truck and flip it again to raise it back up. I know they make kits for cars to do this, but I'm never seen one on a truck.

Jim ,check into Bruno mobility. They make a "turn a seat " Or something along those lines ,,seat turns extends out and lowers ,allowing easy access ,,pretty cool set up .Maybe cheaper than modifying suspension in the long run .
