o/t 1992 dodge cummins

hi, i just bought a 1992 dodge cummins 4x4, just wondering how you guys liked them and what kind of mpg did you get also is there anything i need to know about them? also what all do i need to change other than the basics( oil, trans, diff, fuel filter) anything else? thanks, chris

Oddermatic or 5-speed? What kinda rear-end? Got a '93 dually 5-speed 2wd with low speed rear; about 20 mph; never replaced anything except radiator (split seam), starter and wear items.

I have a '93 Cummins, automatic. Average 14-15 mpg or so around here, 18-20 mpg on the road, 15 mpg @70 mph pulling my 20 + 5 gooseneck on the interstate empty. I have turned the screw a little to give it more starting power with a load. I have never gotten the mileage some of the other guys get but it does the job for me. Still would not trade it to another gas burner. Just my 2 cents worth.

I have a 1991 dodge 4x4 with cummins and it has been a great truck for me. Had 92000 on it when I got it 9 years ago. Now has over 200,000 on it. Have spent about 2500.00 on it over the years. Pulls and hauls anything I want. Biggest problem I had with mine was the speed sensor and the throttle positioning sensor. Both will make tranny shift in and out of overdrive on automatic. Other than that it has been a good one. I will probably drive it til it won,t go no more. Has been very dependable, drive it everyday.

My 95 dodge cummins /automatic is good. My problem is, here in the north-east The truck will rust apart long before the motor gets tired.

Had a 92 2wd dually 5 speed, got 20 mpg hwy, had trans problems but rebuilt it myself, when I sold it had cloase to 500000 miles on it, engine ran good but used some oil and the front end was shot, have an 03, hope it last as long

I have a '92 250 4X4 with the Getrag.. Truck is rock solid, almost trouble free, mechanically.. It is a shame that Dodge used the lowest grade paint, that washed off in the rain. Interior trim such as seats is not very durable. Other than those complaints, truck is great, gets high 20's mpg on the highway..

My youngest son has a 1992 dodge commins. Getting close to 200,000 miles on it and it still runs good. You just hit that starter and its running. Makes my 1992 Chev. 6.5 look sick when pulling a load. He has rode it pretty hard over the years and it has held up very well (except the paint).

had one. stock 4X4 with the 5 speed. 20 mpg average as a farm truck. 24 hwy. 13-15 heavy towing. BEWARE OF THE KILLER DOWEL PIN. cummins used a dowel pin in under the front cover. some of these fell out. got in the cam gears and ruined the engine. Four wheeler had an article about it. a company sells a fix kit. about 100.00 and two hours work.

I have a '91 but it is intercooled so I guess that makes it more like a '92 or '93. I love it. Has just over 250k. 5 speed tranny was rebuilt around 120k and I haven't had a problem since then. Gets around 17mpg running rough tread tires back and forth feeding cows. Drops a little pulling a trailer maybe 14 or 15. 20 mpg on the highway. (Better than my 4-Cylinder Toyota.) Mine is rusted pretty bad above the windshield but otherwise the body is in good shape. Yes, the paint will peel if it hasn't already. Take care of the engine and you'll have to rebuild the rest of the truck multiple times to keep up with it. If you want a little more horsepower with out much money straight pipe it and turn the screw a little. It'll make a noticeable difference. Have fun, sounds like you got a good 'un.

The engine is simply amazing, the rest of it is just a twenty year old design pickup. Remember that body style came out in 1973. The newer trucks were much better.

I have two 93 club cab 2wd duallies, one w/5sp,
one with automatic, both with 3.55 gears. The 5sp
has 305k, gets 18-23 on the highway while weighing 9k with a cab hi topper. The automatic has 175k, gets 17-18 on the highway empty.
Keep fresh pins and bushings in the doors, rocker
panel rust has been a problem, the KDP(killer dowel pin) affecting 89-98.5 Cummins 5.9"s can be fixed for the $36.00 cost of a front main seal from Cummins, a gouge punch, a little blue locktite, some Ultra Black silicone
to seal the front cover up and about 3 hours of your time. Be sure to check the torque on all bolts under the front cover while you are in there. Turbodieselregister.com has all the details and several different approaches to fix the problem. Best one ton pickups that I have owned. The 4wd"s ride pretty rough unless fitted
with air ride.
