PBS Farm Story

My local PBS had a story on about a guy that raised roosters on his acreage.

The acreage "appeared" to be 40a tracts.

The county agreed that the "ag" property was zoned correctly for chickens.

The neighbors signed petitions wanting the chickens gone as they made too much noise.

A judge issued a judgment ordering the man to raise no more than 5 roosters at a time. It appeared that he was raising about 200 or so.

Too bad when your neighbors kid is a brat and too loud out in the backyard you can't get a judge to give you a judgement so they can't have anymore kids.

In the city (at least where we are) they can make all the noise they want until 10:00 pm. After then, you can report them for disturbing the peace.

At the farm, closest neighbor is about 1/4 mile away and older folks. Only noise we get from them is the good kind - tractors running, etc.

Our closest neighbors are in a house that could qualify as a mcmansion, about 600 yards across the valley. The wife told my wife that she really enjoyed the sound of our roosters crowing in the morning.

I live in town but ahve been considering moving to the farm. The house behind us has become a rental home. The people there have two or three dogs that bark all night most nights. Guy is a real jerk, doesn"t work, but his wife does. Talked to him nicely about the dogs, but nothing changed. Called local law, nothing happened. Too close to other houses for a lead based solution to the problem. Hate to move, but really considering it.

Many of you will remember my posts on problem with rodeo steers going through fence. Son bought all new fence and posts. and started to put in fence he hired two men started tearing old fence, two rodeo wanta-be rodeo showed up. They did not get done so son and his two finished fence. One week later one of those steers found it way through a hole in fence in another area an came visiting Son and three cow dogs showed him the way to go home and not through the fence. See trouble on horizon. They have doubled the number of steers added two asses and put out some hay, notice yesterday hay is gone everything skin and bones. Rodeo grounds owned by city. If they show up again I will turn those dogs loose and not call them off till they run them out of town. YAH CITY FOLKS MAKE GOOD NEIGHBORS!!!!!!

Your county and state apparently does not have a "right to farm" ordinance, which protects the farmer in those situations. Of course, the judge would probably just enter the compainant's requested Order if farmer or his lawyer didn't "plead" the ordinance.

I am a retired crop duster. I could tell you a thousand stories about "good" neighbors. One was a lady claimed I broke her mirror on the wall and if I had not changed gears when I came by it would not have happened.

"notice yesterday hay is gone everything skin and bones"

Quick call to the humane society will take care of your problems.

I despise inconsiderate and irresponsible neighbors that are the kind that should NEVER be animal owners.

Since the police won't do anything try talking to the city fathers/mayor/council, etc. City manager too if there is one. Ask them why the police won't take care of the issue if there are ordinances to cover the noise, etc.

I kept calling city hall on a clandestine repair garage that would rev up motors as late as 2 a.m.
After I also got other neighbors to do the same they were soon evicted from their rental house. I had called the landlord but that did no good, took the city calling him to pressure him for change.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease if you get my drift.

Sorry Mike, this is not in AZ. In fact I don't remember them every stating where this occurred. They ALL spoke with American english so I assumed the USA.

There was a story like that in the news paper here about two weeks ago. County north of me a lady bought 25 chicks back in the spring and was raising them in a yard barn and about a 16X16 pen. Story said that neighbors rasied a fuss with the zone'n board. County made her get rid of them. Really sad when this is what our great country has come too. One of our county officials was quoted in the county paper a few years ago as saying we should look at zone'n laws. I ran into him a few weeks later at the store and said I had a bone to pick with him, he threw his hands up and said not to worry he would never bring it up again. Had over 100 angry calls the day the paper came out.

Hey Fud,

I might be totally wrong here but don't you live in Marion? What happened to that animal nuisance ordinance yall had?

Dave

Better than that just call the most self righteous investigative news reporter on the local tv stations. Let them do the work and you can watch the mayor squirm on the 10:00 news with a mic in his face.

I heard somewhere that anti-freeze has something in it to make it taste bad. They said it wasn't to protect animals, but to keep wives from poisoning their husbands. If that is true you will look foolish advising people to use it for animal control.

Had a neighbor last year come complaining because she saw our beehives and claimed the bees were getting into her swimming pool and blocking up the filters. Tried to explain the difference between bees and yellow jackets, but she had her mind made up.

Caught part of that show awhile back too. The roosters were really
crowing away and I can see how it could get annoying after awhile
if it was the real audio they were using for the show.

What burns me up is the city folks that move out
to the country, on a 1/2 acre lot, and then go to
the town board to complain about manure smell, or
animals.
The same people will ignore a howling whining,
half starved dog, chained perminently in the hot
sun with no water, and freezing to death in the
winter, or raise a sick rib showing pony with it's
hooves to far gone to trim, starving on lawn
grass, because "the kids asked for one"!!!
