Hello having a problem with a critter known as a groundhog he has tunneled into my horse barn and is coming in nightly to get something to eat I Imagine.

What would be good bait to catch him in a havahart live trap ????????
I do not want to use poison because he also is going into my horse stalls and we put the horses up nightly.

any suggestions ?????
thanks
Greg

Try apples, they work, or anything that has good odor to attract and doesnt dry up too fast. I would imagine a fresh ear of corn would work well. Put the bait in the trap in late afternoon and break the corn kernels .... rip a bunch open with your fingernail to get the sweet smell of corn in the air. Dad always did this for coons in the corn lot and it worked great!

I use broccoli. At least for New York state woodcchucks, it seems to be their weakness.

I live-trapped over 20 of them this summer and moved them 5 miles away into state forest. My little kid gets a big kick out of it.

Funny how each one has a different personality. Some are quiet and calm, where others go nuts chattering and trying bite you.

Getting them out of the traps is often more difficult then getting them in.

xcsp,

Tennessee groundhogs are suckers for apples. I've trapped (and subsequently shot) many of them. However, I'm facinated by jdemaris' idea of broccoli. I'm going to try that the next time I need to trap one.

Good luck,

Tom in TN

Thanks for all the replys I just set the trap with apples but I think I will go to the store and get some broccoli ,will throw that in there , then I will take the critter to the state game lands and release him.

Will let you know it seems like he comes in the barn at night ,last night after I put the horses in for the night I filled in the hole and this morning it was wide open again ,

That groundhog is strong as it was all gravel he was digging through, will let you know how it goes tonight.

thanks again

Just don't get caught transporting him. In many states, it's legal to shoot them, but NOT legal to live-catch and transport. Hard to figure, but that's the law in many areas including farm country here in New York.

Greg,,,,, I have a Live trap to catch mostly Possum ... and I leave them in the trap for as many days as I can stand, so they make their mess in the trap,,, they think it's their home,

when I catch a Ground Hog in a live trap, I leave the Ground Hog in the trap as Long as possible )( about 3 or 4 days) , which makes their mess in the trap, and when I set the trap, I will always catch another, and another, and another, as they Think it's their home, no need for bait. easy as that,,,,

Greg, I've found that kitty litter or speady dry soaked with ammonia will cause them to leave and not return. Just put a bunch in the hole (or tunnel). May have to repeat. BB

Just put an old blanket in the entrance of one of their holes and soak it with gasoline. The fumes will float down and displace the oxygen thus suffocatting them. Easy as that!! No need to plug any of their holes.
