Post sleeve

I've got two 10 foot gates with a post in the center. One gate is for the drive way and the other is a walk through gate. I sometimes (once every 2 years or so) pull the center post to give a 20 foot opening for a large truck to enter easily. This is currently a gravel drive and the center post is just stuck in the ground about a foot. Still it tough to pull up. Now I'm paving the drive and they are going to pave all the way around the post. They're paving only a couple of feet wide under the walk gate, the rest will be mulch. I'm wondering if it will still be possible to pull the post up or if now is the time to find a sleeve to put in the ground and drop the post in. Any recommendations or comments. How much larger should the sleeve be than the post? My post is 2 3/8 diameter. Should I use a steel sleeve or plastic? Just wondering if anyone had experiences with this I should know about.

Idea of a sleeve in the ground is to reduce friction. Obviously, you have friction. I would use PVC, Post will rust to steel pipe.

Maybe you could buy a 16 Ft, gate and a 4 ft gate. That way you would never have to pull the post and the 4 ft would be convenient to open for walking thru. Just a thought.

Did essentially the same thing with one of my barns, which had a concrete floor for storage of cottonseed (or anything else which needed to be kept off the ground) for feed. Two 14 ft gates met in the middle where I had a 2 1/2 inch pipe sunk in the concrete, which a 2 inch pipe fit.....loosely......into. Never had any trouble, but if one were concerned with rust, a 'plate' could be welded at the appropriate place on the inner pipe to keep water out.

i used a peice of square post for vinyl fence sunk 4 feet in and cut off about 4" above ground. shaved the sides of my 4x4 center post with the chain saw.
Works good- the peice sticking out of the ground lets you sight the hole so you don't run it over.
I wave a 12' and a 10" mated up so I can get the trailer backed in to move manure without tearing down the gate or the fence
