I'm looking for a tractor to use for mowing, using my 8' flail mower. Will a JD 1010 run a mower that big? The local NH dealer has a 1010 gas with a loader that they have listed at 5k. That seems high for a tractor of that age, but I don't keep up with what the Deeres are going for.
Any comments on this tractor as far as it's capabilities?

Thanks
John

Run don't walk away from that one. The JD 1010 and 2010 where problem tractors and at that price it sounds like a big problem in more then one way. Parts for the 1010 and 2010 are also very hard to come by.

the 1010 and 1020's are HORRIBLE! they have tons of problems. they are known as the worst tractors ever made by JD. I dont think i have ever heard one good thing about them. I would run from it like old said.

Go to the JD forum and type in 1010 in the search box. Lots of talk about those tractors - most of it negative.
Why, some of the JD gurus there will even admit that they're worse than a Ford N.
wink

Thanks for the quick replies, I guess I'll keep looking for a mowing tractor.
I figure something in the 40-60 hp range will be the cat's meow for running my mower.

Thanks again

John

They sold 3 of them at an Iowa auction recently. They brought in
the $4800 to $5000 range if I remember correctly. No loaders, just
tractors.

You guys are all getting your facts confused. The horror stories abound about the 1010 and 2010 diesels but the gas versions of those tractors used the same engines as the 40 and 45 combines and there is absolutely nothing wrong with the gas engines. I have had combines with the 115, 145 and 165 gas engines and they were completely reliable. A big issue with the tractors was very poorly designed brakes, they could never be counted on. The trannys share a good deal of common parts with the 420/430 and for the horse of that engine, the trannys lasted just fine.
Alot would depend on the tractor shape but if both the tractor and loader were in good shape, a 1010 gas would not scare me away in the slightest if I was in need of a tractor that size.

Funny I have a gas 1010 and from the day I got it it has been JUNK and as I said before RUN away from them plus Parts are next to impossible to find for them

You should clarify that NEW parts are hard to find for that tractor, used parts are very common, there were over 30K of the tractors made, not very hard at all to find used parts.
I don't see that just because you have a worn out tractor that would indicate the whole bunch of them produced were trash. My family had a 2010 row crop gas on our farm for most of the seventies, and it was a reliable tractor. We used it mostly for raking hay and baling. The only reason it was sold was because we found a second 3020 PS and got rid of the 2010 to afford the 3020. The biggest problem with the 2010 was the poorly under designed brakes, the rest of the tractor was a pretty reliable machine.

lets be fair Old, I believe you told me that 1010 was broke when you got it. seems like the head was off or something. Correct me if I am wrong.

I have one that is worn out well it was 10+ years ago rated at 36 hp I think and I bet it is down to about 25 now or less but it ran my 6 foot bush hog fine. That price seems high to me but with the loader it could be a good price. As said before the 1010s were not deere's best but the gas ones seem to be good old reliable tractors. Only issue I can complain about on mine is the brakes. I have a newer Diesel Massey Ferguson so that old 1010 has been given a bale of hay and a stall to rest in until I have the $$$ to start a restore.

the 1010 amounted to little more than a repowered 430.....they slid a 4 cylinder in the place of the 2 popper.

I had a gas 430 and it was a POS! Uncomfortable to operate, hard to get off and on, brakes horrible and expensive to repair. Glad to see it gone.

I have a neighbor who was gung ho to find himself a 1010....he did and then was gung ho to see it go!

Caveat Emptor!

The gas engines had the cyl liners made on a plate same as the diesels and are $$$$$$$$$. The mechanisms inside rockshaft housing are complicated and very hard to repair if needed. Brakes weren't very good when they were built.
