I have a New Holland 489 Haybine, last spring 08 I put a new knive bar in it, pulled out the old one and slide in the new one. Ran it all last summer no problems, 3 fields this year and it locked up on me. I looked it over and I found the pitman arm nut was gone, except a little trace of it on the threads, the bolt was bent and the new knife bar was snapped off right by the pitman arm bolt and bearing. I did not hit anything with the mower,I know the field and its clean, has been for 20 years! could the nut have worked its way loose and caused this to happen? also I have noticed the knifes are pretty hot to the touch after mowing, could the heat cause them to lock up? Also when I put in the new Knives in was I supposed to adjust anything on the guards, mine are stub guards. Hopefully I can fix this tomarrow so I can get my mowing done. Thanks JayinNY

I'll bet the nut came loose(should be a locknut), causing the bar to run out of alignment, causing the heat, flexing the cutter bar and eventually breaking it. I have a 489 and I can just see it happening.

Put in a new bar with a new bolt and locknut.

I think it had a new lock nut and bolt when I got the bar last spring, cant be remember thought. This time I will lock tight it on to be sure, Thanks, I hope thats all is. J

When a sickle drive comes loose it moves back and forth with a jerking action instead of a smooth back and forth motion.

This will tear a sickle in to in no time.

Normally they don't come with the bolt and nut. Use a grade 8 SAE threaded bolt. Double nut it if you think it may continue to be a problem.
