Motor heating problem

I have a used chipper, but new to me. It has a ford 330 v8 engine. When it runs at high speed the radiator stays out of the red, but at idol it climbs to the hot zone. The fan is about 4 in from the radiator. what would be better move the fan as close as I can get it to the radiator, or install a shroud around the fan. The fan already has a 2 in spacer. If I add two more spacers this would make the fan 6in. out. Would this be too far out on the pump shaft? Stan

Shroud would be far better. Plus flush, replace thermostat, check hoses, use 50/50 Prestone green and distilled water. Tom

check the radiator cap too - they have to build the right pressure in the radiator of they can get hot. ben there/done that

Make sure the radiator air side is clean, the pressure cap is working, and the timing is correct and the advance is working. Make sure the mixture is not too lean and the idle speed is correct.
Since it stays cool at high rpm and only overheats at idle, it maybe that the idle speed is too low. What does the idle speed spec call for?

My woodchuck has the 361 Ford. Has a shroud around fan probably somewhere around 4" deep. Just a big square box with a hole for the fan blade. Makes a real pain to do a water pump or radiator though. Previous owner may have had enough and tossed it.
Those almost have to have a shroud to get enough airflow since they aren't moving down the road while running.

Maybe it would just be easier to remove the fan and install an electric fan..

Creating a shrouding should work fine..those "FE" Blocks don't usually get hot..especially the 330..the "Smallest" of the group..

Can you find a smaller water-pump pulley to speed up the pump (and Fan)..?

Ron..

Let's try that again... You got it bassackwards!

Too much advance will make it ping or detonate.

Too little advance will make it overheat.

I vote for a proper fitting shroud.
Will definitely change the dynamics of airflow vs waterflow at both full and idle RPM.
Would NOT add any more spacers.
