O/T 1992 Buick (Bryan in Iowa)

I took your advice and did the diagnostics on the Buick. It gave me codes 12 (which i think means its testing)17, 23, 33, 34, 58. I am having trouble figuring out what these codes are and how to fix them. I have heard that some of these codes may be "stored ones"... should I disconnect the battery for a while and read the codes again? Thank you in advance. Any help would be appreciated.

Just a suggestion:

Yes, clear the codes.

But then, take that big hose off the throttle body and clean the carbon from around the throttle bore and plate---both front and back with a good brake clean agent.

Nine times out of ten, this will cure your idle problem.

Codes don't tell ya squat as far as what is wrong with the outfit. They only report what the computer saw as being out of primeter.

One defect can set a whole string of codes and there be absolutely nothing wrong with those systems.

What problem are you having?

The Code 58 is for the anti-theft system and problems there will certainly cause all sorts of "no start" or "starts when it wants to" problems.

Yes Sir,

That should do it on a '92 model.

Note tho, that this isn't "curing" anything; just giving you a clean slate to begin your diagnositcs.

It's worth mentioning that all your codes are kinda pointing at that upper throttle body area save one.

I'd sure clean up that throttle body; seen it happen a million times. Also, check that air filter.

Thanks guys for the help.. I will try that! It looks like a couple codes are for the MAF sensor, is cleaning recommended or should I just get a new one?

Well, everyone pretty well covered it . Clean throttle body. i would also clean the MAF sensor. Shot of carb spray , or brake clean or the element , be gentle ! Usually they have a hesitation or low power if MAF is bad .But long as i'm there i clean it . Run it , clear codes , take it for good long test drive , recheck codes . If you have any that came back then you have somewhere to start diagnoising from . Remember though ,,as Allan said, codes are Cause and Effect . Keep us posted
