O/T My garage door problem

Here is a good example if you don't know what you are doing leave it alone. I never have been able to do that. On my last post I mentioned I was having trouble adjusting my garage door. I was working on it today. and after adsusting the springs for the 10th time,. I thought the door was going down rather hard. About that time I herd a very loud noise, wife also heard it in the house. I went inside and found three springs broken laying on the floor. After buying three new springs, and instructions, my door now works like it should. The new springs now have a safety wire inside to keep them from flying. stan

Glad you weren't hurt by it. I knew a fellow some years back who wasn't so lucky. He wound up with an ill-fitting glass eye that his lids wouldn't close over when he dozed off. He was a Canadian diplomat, and his daughter used to tell anyone who noticed the eye that he dealt with matters so sensitive that he'd trained himself to sleep with one eye open.

It seems that just a few short years ago, I was called a worry wart because I installed the saftey wires.

In our comunity it was considered just another government control thing that got over done.

Therefore I always clocked out before instaling the saftey wires so they were installed for no cost. Even then, I was considerd to be just too careful when they weren't needed anyway.

I have seen around six or seven cases like yours, simply totaly avoidable.

I was wondering how you broke three springs?? I could understand two, but simply do not understand the three ordeal. What is missing in my head?

They broke by having all four adjusted too tight, and 35 years of operation may also helped So when I closed the door the springs were all stretched beyond their limit. It is a law now that all springs sold have a inside safety wire. Stan

I prefer the torsion springs as they are contained by the shaft. There is still the issue of a lift cable whipping if something breaks.

All my doors have been changed over as I had an extension spring let go a few years back myself.

Before my last employer built a new building, they spent more on clamping door springs back together than they could have put in new springs for.
