Doubling up lip seals

Would it be a good precaution to double up the lip seals (stack 2 together) on my Allis Chalmers 7000's input shaft. I have put 2 new seals in it in the last 2 years and they have all leaked right after replacement. I figured if I put 2 in the tractor, I would have less of a chance of it leaking. The shaft has no grooving, just shiny spots where the original seal ran, but no grooving. There is enough depth to put in 2 lip seals.

Yep, I would. Pack some lithium grease in there to keep the outer seal lubed. The new seals are only half the size as the old and not near half as good. Just my opinion. Fred

Yeah, they definitely aren't as tough as the old ones, that's for sure. They may be more round and made to tighter tolerances, but I don't think they will last as well in rough conditions like a tractor. I was wondering about the lubrication. Are seals supposed to let miniscule amounts of oil past to lubricate themselves?

I just went through the same process on an old backhoe spool. About 3 years ago I did the double up touch and it has worked well until last week just after I added hyd oil to the tank and overfilled it too much. A couple of hours later, both those seals blew. So I ordered new ones and the guy at the counter said "How about upgrading the seal, then double up". So I upgraded the seal to a double lip seal then put two in again. This time I'm more careful on the overfill. So far so good. Oh also added loctite on outside edge.
Hope this helps.

Aloha,
If there isn't a groove on the shaft, maybe the bearing is bad, causing the shaft to wobble and damaging the seal. TIA

I checked for play in the shaft and any catching, but the shaft rotates smoothly and doesn't move around.

Made it five years doubling seals before I had to change out a bearing. Worked fine. As others said, a little lube between the inner and outer seals probably helps.

I already knew the shaft was grooved quite bad and the bearing was gone. Two seals once a year were pretty cheap.
