New refrigerator

I just read about a new stimulus program for appliances. My refrigerator is from 1991. According to my electric rates 12.7 c per Kwh, the energy star model should pay off in less than 3 years, without any rebates. Since we have been thinking of replacing it anyway, this should work out nice.

Wouldn't you know it? We just bought a new refrigerator and dishwasher last month.

i think your alright. Isn't this a tax right off anyway? Just anothe one of the current regime's tricks at getting us to think they are doing right by us.

We just bought one of those new energy efficient fridges from Sears, and the electric bill is higher than ever. I wish we had kept the old one now. This new one hardly ever stops running, and the old one was colder and hardly ran at all.
I think those darn stickers they slap on them are a lot of hokum.

I think there is something added to it. I am all for reducing my energy usage. Less money outta my pocket the better. My little chevy HHR is getting 30 -31 mpg. I frequently haul 8 ft boards in it. I have a GMC 6L 3/4 PU, but it gets about 13 or 14 at best, so it only gets about 1000 miles a year on it. No reason send the arabs any more $$$ than I have too. That little chevy is great for running around town. I didn't do any clunker deals, but this is something that makes sense, for me.

I would complain to Sears that this unit is running to much. I know that a refrigeration must have the right amount of gas ( freon) to operate correctly. Too much gas, or to little and they won't do the job. If this happened from new it shoulb be warranty.

I had a bad bill recently, but it was the fan on my furnace / a/c system was turned on, running 24/7. Turned that back to auto for a/c and dropped $100 off my electric bill.

We were just looking at refrig at Sears and the energy stickers said $56 a year to run them. These were 25-28 cu ft higher end refrig.

My brother is an electrician and he has told me several times that the new refrigerators are designed to run a lot more because they use smaller compressors to save electricity. Seems like they take a lot of electricity when they kick in so they just let them run more.
Now if they use less electricity than an old one or not or if they are cooler or not, I can't tell you.

Sounds like the Gov has found another way to pi$$$$ away OUR TAX DOLLARS. What's next? How about the Gov buy every homeowner their own windmill. That sounds like a great idea. Everybody will use less electicity. Or, how about our good comrades in the Gov buy everybody a horse and buggy? Then we won't be using that nasty gasoline to get to work (If you still have a job). OR, how about the Gov taking remote control of our thermostats in our houses? Wow, think of all the energy we could save then. HEY SHEEEP wake up for you subsidised appliances. What a joke, We are being buried and it looks like people can't wait to jump in the hole.

Don't know where you could buy another to last that long.

They always want to sell you extended warranty.

My experience is get it !!

Anything I bought new in the last 15 years just lasted 3 days past the first given warranty.

[Must have a self destruct built in.]

Your brother is an electrician, but not a Refrigeration tech. running a motor longer uses more electric then not running it,

Using a smaller motor don't use less electric, not running it uses less electric.

HOW do you think they got that figure, ( $56.00 ) a year for running a Frig ???????

Easy Answer (( BY NOT OPENING THE DOOR FOR A YEAR ))

That's a not brainer for a few,,, but for others, confussing.....

We bought a fridge with the freezer on the bottom instead of on the top. We will never go back to the old style fridge.
6+ft tall people should not have to get on their knees to look in the fridge.

Update: The new dishwasher doesn't dry near as well as the old ten year old one. Apparently the manufacturer (Whirlpool) cut the drying time to save energy.

The new refrigerator is a Maytag double door with the freezer in the bottom, and ice and water taps in the outside of one of the doors. The water tap froze somewhere in the innards of the unit and no water comes out. (It worked for the first week). So far, the tech who does warranty work has been in touch with the factory and no one knows how to fix it.

The good news is, my wife bought both units on her own so she can't complain to me.

about the Gov buy every homeowner their own windmill.

Believe it or not that one already exists. You can get an energy credit up to $5000 (Someone will know).

How do you read the energy sticker? There was a dollar amount along the top bar on the sticker on these refrigerators and a lesser amount below the bar. I think the top was 76 and the bottom 56.

I suppose I would have to see the energy sticker, it's always a good idea to have that explained, but I'm sure they have some thing to say that would not make sense,

any one who has/had a good engineering back ground can easly see what a Refrigerator has to do to keep the temp. at the required set point.
