beer drinking

Thinking about cutting back or giving it up, usually have 4 or 5 every night. Thinking I might feel a little more energetic with out it. 52 years old and starting to be more concerned about my health I guess. How many of you guys give it up and feel better?

There is nothing wrong with a couple of beers daily. My specialist recommended no more than two per day. It can be part of your daily intake of fluids.
Coffee on the other hand can be bad for men's prostate gland, can cause swelling and frequent urination. One coffee in the morning is OK but if you drink five or six a day you'd be better drinking more beer.

Cut back to one. My Dr. told me that if I was drinking six or so a night that he'd tell me to quit, but since I only drink one,I'd be better off to keep it up.

well I use to drink a 12 pack or more a night, now I just have a couple on the weekends, feel a whole lot better in the morning I am 47 years old, guess I had to grow up sometime, Budweiser forever!

Gave it up years ago, don't miss it neither but a report on radio today suggested it was a link to bowel cancer, strange because that's what I had but how can it be proven also another one in the top end[Darwin] report that kidney stones prevalent, put it down to all the beer being consumed and very little water. mind you just reports.

I like 1-2, 3 at the most 2-3 times a week. Cant say as I feel better or worse except when gout is lurking. But then Im supposed to drink red wine every night when its acting up. Personally, I prefer beer.

everthing in moderation, time and a place for everything, old saying but they do have good merit. I drank South Carolina dry about 15 yrs ago now 1/2 a month maybe, figure out my exwife was the problem !!!!

I used to drink like a fish in water. Cut down to a 12 pack a week. After my third heart attack(didn't know about the first two)Thought it was time for a change. Doc now has me on green tea and low salt tomato juice. With the tea I can water the yard about every half hour. With the juice I don't feel as hungry. Still drink BEER and will until my funeral. Just not as much.

I never understood that if the goal wasn't to get drunk (as stated by drinker) why would a person drink more than a couple of beers a night. I mean do you sit down and drink 6 cokes a night or 6 glasses of water or 6 glasses/bottles of anything non alcoholic?

Gave it up 3 years ago. It truly is a poison to the human body, but I'm not one to say what anybody else should do.

I drank enough the first half of my life to account for the second half already.

djw, come on over I've got a couple 6 pacs in the cooler. Been in there for about a year. Ought to be cold by now.
I still think I'd like it just never drink it. Give it up, when you get older it makes you feel bad and it just isn't worth it. Take if from a guy who has drank enough to float a battleship. .....

I haven't had a beer in 15 years. It suddenly occured to me I simply didn't like the taste and I liked the effect even less. Even in my serious drinking days in the Marine Corps, there were times I found it more fun to stay sober and watch everyone else make a darned fool of themselves.

I now have a very occasional mixed drink, but that's it.

I did, however, have a great aunt who had to have her glass of beer with every meal, morning, noon, and night. She lived to something like 96.

DRINK ALL YOU WANT IT WILL KEEP YOU FROM GETTING OLD LITTERALLY, THEIR ARE A LOT MORE OLD DRUNKS THAN OLD DOCTORS JUST KIDDING

I never drank due to 1 major reason, If you need medical attention, or your wife does you wont be able to legally drive yourself/or her to the ER. Not to mention the moral factor of being half snokered in the evening.
Besides look at the money you will save.

Never drank more that a dozen partial bottles of beer in my 71 years. Could not bring myself to finish one. To me it tasted a whole lot like horse pee. Been drinking 20 or more cups of coffee a day for more than 40 years. I think you will find that the connection between prostate problems and coffee is myth.

4-5 beers a day is too much for your good health. If you are going to abuse your body, me thinks it is better to do before you get older.

I bet beer is not as bad as all the medicine the dope selling doctors want to give people. I'm 54 and take no medicine but have a brother 3 years older who takes all kind of crap and believes every word the quack he goes to tells him. I believe eat from the garden, raise your own meat, work every day and you live as long as the good lord intends for you to.

I saw a statistic that said that anyone who drank
a 6 pack a day had an exceedinly high risk for
rectum cancer

Have a beer now or then, used to drink 3 or 4 every night, more on weekends. DUI now can cost 15K.

I drink beer and I like it. About once a year I'll quit for a month or so..........just to see if I can. I"ve never had a problem quiting. I never felt any different when I was off the stuff. I'm 60 years old........never had a problem with it.......healthy as a horse. I do know what my limits are though. It's a personal choice. You have to know what your limits are. You'll just have to quit and see how it affects you. Life is pretty short.

There is a gene that causes you to taste alcohol or not. Those that have the gene do not like beer and such. Those that do not have the gene can't taste the alcohol so are more likely to be alcholics.

I have the gene, so I don't drink. Alcohol tastes horrible to me.

IA Gary, I am no expert but I understand that decafinated coffee is a better route. I now drink the ocassional green tea for breakfast.
Going by prostate care guide coffee, tea, alcohol ,cheese and meat are all irritants to the prostate, however in moderstion they don't necessarily cause a problem. I can see excessive cofffee and alcohol..had a discussion here a while back where some guys drank up to 30 cups of coffee in a day..that'd hurt.

I stopped heavy drinking about 30 years ago. I ENJOY ONE BEER every few nights, and even forget about having one a week or tow at a time. A 12 pack can last between 4-5 weeks average for me.

I gave up beer a few years ago because I realized I didn't care for the taste. I drink an occasional whiskey and cola, but a fifth of Beam or Jack will generally last me a year or more. How many beer drinkers spend less than $20 a year on their beverage of choice?

Brother was on blood thinner after leg clot, was under the impression he couldn"t have any ethanol to drink with medicine- sober for 6 months then. Had a followup checkup to see about dosage adjustment , general recovery, leg healing and mentioned he was not drinking so medicine would work, doc told him no drinking restriction with the rat poison/Warifin/Coumadin(sic?) he was on, one of few conditions were the ethanol helped thin blood and prevented clots. Next 6 months lost while drunk. Next followup check doc clarified drinking - as in "no excess" didn"t mean no more than 12 pack a day but more like no more than 12 pack a week of small ones instead of big ones. A large bottle of wine was supposed to last 2 weeks instead of 2 days and beer was not to be taken to the limit at same time. Brother preferred to stay drunk like when he smashed leg.
I"ve been told I can alternate a glass of wine or beer with the aspirin - means couple aspirin and couple glass"s a week total. RN

I was 53 when I quit drinking and 54 when I quit smoking. Those two things were causing 99% of all my problems. I too was having 5 or 6 every day and I have never looked back. It has been great for 12 years now.

I apparently have the Scotch gene- Scotch whiskey tasted marvelous to me, from the first time I tried it at about age 21. Have never overdone it, but nothing better than two fingers of straight Scotch at room temperature, with a little cheddar cheese (also at room temp.- chilling foods/ beverages is highly overrated).

No drinks for thirty five years, no smokes since fourty years.

For all the excuses to drink, it is to make a horses putute out of yourselves, and I learned to do it without beer.

I run with a EMS team and get to see what happens to the know it all life of the party folks. It is surprising how often they do survive a accident. Unlike the passengers survival rate.

Like my grand dad died peacfully in his sleep, unlike the five passengers in the car he was driving at the time.

I stopped 20 months ago.I have a occasional non alcoholic beer just for the bottle thing.Feel better energy wise but it was hard to adjust to going to sleep instead of passing out.Not a bad thing.Ruined a perfectly good 25 year run,at least 4 a day when I quit though.

Yu can have the booze,,, I do have a glass of red wine once in a while at a good dinner, but it's just for sippen, not drinking...

Guess I'm one of the "old" guys at 55 - Pot of coffee in the morning and a few beers at night + plus a few cigarettes in between!

To me, it's like the ProStock and SuperStock pullers say: If it's goin go - it's goin to to go, if it's goin to blow - it's goin to blow!

Anymore your'e more likely to get hit by someone texting or talking on the cell phone.

Just my $0.02 in this economy

I don't drink much, but always have one cold one in the frig. When I come in nine at night soaked with sweat to the socks after about 5-600 bales put in the barn there's nothing like one cold one. My many-time supper is a beer & a bananna.

And, here's old Rusty Jones--sitting by the computer, reading all these laments about beer! And, sipping on one right now! And, it is the only one of the day! Lasts an hour or more, and some snacks with it, and no problems with my health, except fer a couple trips to hospital 3 years ago, where they wouldn't give me any beer, but they did give me a case of Cellulitis!
I turn 85 in a couple weeks, so my one beer every evening is going to stay that way. I don't have any other problems with my health-one Zocor a day is keeping things in check. And, i work around here every day fixing mowing equipment for folks, collecting scrap, and doing yard work! Heck, ya can't just quit one a day! At least, i can't. Dr. didn't say not to have one like i do!

i still have a cold one now and then i have a jug of jack daniels next to the bed i sometimes get a dry hacking cough a good snort seems to calm it down
when i started going out with tall kid's mom i cut way back on drinking and smoking cigars. oh i still smoke a cigar or two a week.

I celebrated 35 sober years also this year. Before that I tried to drink the world dry. Really like the taste of scotch and a good beer. Drank a lot of Pfungstadter beer in Weisbaden Germany in the 50's/.Never stopped until I lost everything(family, home, cars , boat, airplane job etc. Started over from scratch but without the booze. Had lots of energy and woke up without a hangover ever sice. Hopefully will meet the Lord sober. Many people can do with a couple but some of cannot. All or nothing. No one needs booze. A good tall glass of iced tea after a hard days work does wonders. Henry

Not enough alcahol in 5 beers to do any harm. It's all the fillers and junk that makes you fat and lazy..... If you think you are addicted, it's time to go cold turkey. If you're like me and just enjoy the taste and it doesn't cause you to do without or skimp on quality of life for you and your family, enjoy. Maybe get away from that budweiser slop and find a good stout beer.

Enjoy life,

Dave

I fall into the "pot of coffee in the morning, a few beers at night" category myself- occassionally a bourbon. If there's a pitcher of ice tea in the frig, though, I'll grab a glass of that- I consider a beer the lesser of two evils when compared to a soda.
Steven King, when asked how many beers he drank a night, answered "all of them". If he went to bed with an unopened beer in the refrigerator, he couldn't sleep- had to get up and finish them or pour them down the drain. As long as I can go to bed at night with at least one beer in the frig, I'm thinking I don't have a problem.
