VVVVVVVVVRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOMMMMMMMM.........now that was interesting.
I was bush hogging with the 435 and she had a Detroit Diesel runaway. Glad the air pre-cleaner was loose enough to pull off. Held my hand over the intake pipe. Slowed her down into a cloud of smoke but had to stand of the brakes to stop her. It was getting some air through the crankcase ventilation system.
Glad I had got around to installing fresh brake disks last spring.
Turned out the internals of the governor came loose and let the throttle shaft pull out of the governor body.

Emergency Shut down not working?? Witnesed an 8-92 do that one time, the flywheel come apart and cut a man in two while he was trying to shut it down. Call 1-800 DetroitDeisel to get that fixed. Very deadly........

All the more reason to carry a good sized CO2 extinguisher...
That shuts the screamin' demon down pretty quick.

Hello Dave in TX,
I don't mean to hijack the thred, but are you sure it was a 92 series engine. I am familiar with the onroad truck model of that engine, and i don't recall any emergency shut down as it was for the 71 series engines. Was it an offroad engine?
Guido.

Small piece of wood works over a precleaner, or pipe inlet, probably something good to have around these in the future, must have pulled on your hands pretty hard ?

You must have had a pretty good red ring in the palm of your hand by the time you got it off. Glad to hear she didn't blow up on you. Jim

Few things are more frightening than a runaway diesel. Had a Mercedes marine diesel run away on a friend's sailboat. The whole thing couldn't have lasted more than a minute, as he shut off the fuel immediately. But it seemed like HOURS.

I used to work at a GMC dealer, there is nothing quite like the sound of a 225 or 318 when the rail goes over center!

It's only the blower drawing so it's impossible to get more than 14.7psi across the hand and it was only a 2" pipe. Closer to 10-11psi likely. No problem to lift the hand off the pipe.
It was a real waker upper.

Another remedy. TAke something heavy and knock the fuel filter off. Works every time. Bernie Steffen

At college just about every MOTOR'S manual had pages with round holes where someone had used the book for runaway while learning tune up. tried the old board trick on a 350 8-71 and all it did was pull all the oil throught the rings and keep going. Had to use CO 2 on it

Say what?

Alot of detroits had e-stops on the blower intake, especially oilfield apps.

Ever seen one lit up backwards?

Had one run away backwards on an Allis HD10 dozer. I was pushing trees into a windrow and running the dozer up the row. It stalled at the top of a row and started running down backwards. The engine kicked over and oil from the air cleaner when everywhere. I stuffed my felt hat (which every Australian then wore) into the exhaust pipe. That stopped it!

I kicked the 720 JD diesel over backwards in front of the crowd my first time tractor pulling.
It was a shower in filthy aircleaner oil as it blasted out the intake stack.

My nephew works as an Army Reserve mechanic. He says the first tool you grab when doing Detroit work was the clipboard for shuttin' the air off.

Had a 671 in a truck take off like that while I was trying to adjust the idle speed. Just happened to have the valve cover loose and reached up pulled it off and grabbed the rack and shut it down. Pretty scary feeling though. Had a 4430 jd do that after sitting for a couple of years I think I took a wrench and busted the site glass. If you read this I apologize for Snapping back at you about the pto question It was the end of a very bad day.
