Could any of you tell me what problems the earlier Duramax"s had and when they were corrected? If there are certain years to avoid....which are they? Thanks.

I've got a first year one, never had a problem. Most of the stories you hear are just rumors. The earlier ones don't have all the polution stuff the later ones do.

I've got a year one duramax and never once had a problem with the motor or driveline.
I picked up some bad fuel somewhere and filled the fuel filter with garbage, that gave me some shifting/fuel starvation but changed the fuel filter and she runs as good now as when i bought her new.
Heaviest load I pulled was 13 ton about 400 miles. Shy of one blown tire on the trailer, never had a problem nor did the truck hesitate once.
And all this praise is coming from a Ford guy! lol

The 2001 thru 2003 had injector problems. GM extended the warranty to 7 years or 250000 miles. The 04 on were pretty much trouble free. The 05 on have troubles with tranny cooling lines leaking.

Thanks Scott, that was the kind of information I was wanting.

Most any brand vehicle will have a period where the wrinkles get ironed out. I"ve yet to see any that were perfect the day they were introduced.

Had an 03 Duramax, never had any problems, but was gutless on the torque. Sold it & found a 03 Dodge & coudn't be happier!
