back to balers

Hey folks,
Thanks for the feedback on my baler ??? . Lowdensity was the term I was looking for. Got enough feedback from forums over here to figure it's not something I want (parts are pretty much unavailable). So, a small square baler will be the way I go. Brands available here seem to be used in the States also so I'll throw out the brands and see if you folks can give the pros/cons.
What I've found the most of has been:
Claas
Massey Ferguson
Welger
International
and a couple JD's

I like the idea of an International cause I have a red tractor and there is a dealer 5 miles away. Don't see a lot of them though so don't want to spend a lot of time with the dealer because the machine isn't any good.

Any input?

Thanks, Dave

Howdy dave2, New Hollands & JD's are the balers, I hear, to be the best around here. I own an IH 47 baler & some in the neighborhood figue I don't know better or am a glutton for punishment. However, when the knotters work, they tie up a storm. I like my baler. First crop, this year, I had 155 bales & it only missed one on a twine changeover. Second cutting had to come off the ground while still pretty damp. Broke 18-20 bales! No amount of change in the feeding or bale tension seemed to change the fact the hay was still wet. I baled up a few bales of straw, to help clean out the baler. Didn't miss, not a one. If you don't mind a quirk here & there with your baler, a red one should be ok. Try & get a few pics if you get the red one, please. I think those balers look sharp with the extra shielding. Good luck in your hunt - Mike

P.S. Hope you don't find one made on a Monday or Friday! ;^)

Going to look at this one Monday. Not sure if my tractor will handle it. It's a 430 (5ft pickup) there thinking I should be looking a little smaller. Tractor is 26HP and comparable to an 8N in size.

WOW, that is sharp! If your tractor is about the size of an 8N & you have fairly flat fields, you should be ok (I here-tell you can run a baler with a Farmall Super C). You'll really feel that plunger push you around, though. Say, are the bales going to the ground or on a wagon? A near full wagon might make the tractor struggle some. I baled with my H, 47 baler & wagon combo for a season, on flat ground, with no difficulty. The H is a little more powerful & a bit heavier than the N series of Fords. Just my $.02 as I'm still one of the youngin's here. - Mike

Dave I have used my Ford 1720 27hp compact tractor with my IH37 small square baler on a hill and it worked fine. I had The thrower off and no wagon, and the 4wd worked great on the hill, plus the weight of the loader. I wouldent use it on my 346 Deere baler, but it worked on the IH baler fine. On level land you should have no problems. hth
