Never gonna borrow out a gravity box again.

Borrowed out my graviity boxes last fall and speciffcally said NOT to use them for long distance hauling, only around the farm. Well, put new tires on the front of the 10 ton yesterday and found that my tie rod ends are all beat out, ton off slop, now there she sits with 300+ bushels of grain in her and I dont feel comfertable hauling it with all that sway. Burn me once shame on you, burn me twice shame on me. Was hoping ot haul it in to the elevator in the am this saturday. Dont people understand when ya borrow things youy send it back better than youy recieved it.

That philosophy went out with the hula hoop, I trust two people to borrow any of my stuff. My father and my wife. If you don't want it broke don't loan it out. BTDT :>) I have found that if you want to never see a relative again just loan them some money. Consider it a gift and let em walk away, works every time.

I call it courtesy, and it's lost concept for the most part, I'm afraid.

A few of us still cling to it.

SiL borrowed the pressure washer to clean down his house in prep for painting. Had it for two weeks (I had to go get it). He didn't break anything but I've never seen anything so filthy as he left it.

Flip side is my neighbor and me. He has the bigger and better workspace (heated is a big part of that) so I'll ask to use it now and then. His tools are cleaned and put away when I'm done. Any consumables or tools broken or damaged are replaced, and the floor is swept up and cleaner than I found it when I'm done. I put 50 gallons into the fuel tank for his garage every fall. He will occasionally borrow tools from me and they are returned timely and clean. On the occasions that he needs tools that I have and it's easier to work in my garage, he is as courteous as I am in his.

I figure we're both lucky, 'cause most folks don't operate like that anymore.

My biggest problem lending things was my mouth..I finally learned to keep my mouth shut and not always be offering something to be loaned out. Some years back I lent my relatively new circular saw, about a year later I went to get it in the garage and it wasn't there..AND I couldn't remember who I lent it too. Some time after we were at a friend's house for a BarBQue beside his new pool and deck. He mentioned something about a saw for the job but didn't remember who he borrowed it from...We had a good laugh but it was a good lesson..after that when somebody wanted something ..I didn't have one. or I already lent it or it was broke, or I sold it or the tires were bad. I have lent my hay rake and a hopper wagon to a neighbour who bales for me sometimes..he is a quality farmer and a quality guy, the stuff comes back in as good condition and it is never abused.
MY mother had a motto "Never a borrower or a Lender be"

I loaned out my two big gravity boxes about 6 years ago and the only time I see them is on the road behind a pickup or tractor. They will probly show back up when they need tires or someting welded.
Dixie gets upset every time she sees them but since I quit farming I don't have a use for them.

You (and your mom) are breakin' poetic and literary on us, there, Michael.

"Neither a borrower nor a lender be . . . "

. . . from Polonius's advice to his son, Laertes, in Shakespeare's Hamlet.

Lucky you. You loan money to my inlaws and its like giving money to the Jehovah's Witnesses. They'll be on your porch every weekend looking for a handout.

My biggest problem with loaning stuff out is my wife. She'll offer it to someone to borrow and then maybe tell me about it afterwards.

I am retired now. However, when I farmed, it was my experience that it depended on who I loaned something to that counted. Most of my friends always sent back equipment in as good or better shape than it was when they borrowed it. There was one, however, that generally returned it broken or bent.

We had a neighbor that took a wheel off his trailer when he was done with it. He didn't have the nerve to tell others that he wasn't borrowing his trailer out, but if they wanted to put that wheel back on the trailer, they could use it. Nobody ever put the wheel back on.

Some you just can't let borrow, just the way it is, others respect and treat is as if they owned it.

I never realized but it's fairly common for farmers to kind of share, borrow, rent out around here, as the crop lands are kind of spread out, and or sometimes a situation occurs that requires it.

The farmer I've been helping does this, with his 6620 JD combine, and his 7420 JD with the 582 round baler, usually hired out, but reasonable, farmers still kind of work together. When the baler goes out, there is an experience hand on it if it's not him, but the combine he usually runs himself. Nearby dairy operation, 500 head, quite a bit of equipment, lost a combine to fire, he did their 200 acres that was not chopped. Works both ways, they would do the same for him. Whenever something does go out, it's clean, fueled up, greased and field ready, and is expected to be returned like that.

railhead I told her that sooo many times that when I start to tell her again, she says she forgot. On that she has a menory of about 30 second. If I do something she never forgets it. At least not all of it.

I's not up to your neighbor to repair you wagons.Tie rods take a long time to wear out, they were bad when you loaned them.

I went through the gears last fall before my usage and I knew that they had a very small amount of play, they are now really bad, in my belief, due to hauling many many times very long distances at too high of speeds. I hauled my corn in last fall with the onein particular and it trailed very well, now it sways back and forth like crazy. To borrow and use is one thing, to borrow and abuse is another.

Wouldn't be that they added more air pressure to the tires for higher speed pulling? Only reason I ask is that I have a 10 Ton MN running gear that had a 16ft hay wagon on it. This spring I built a new 20ft bed for it and instead of 8 bales I now haul 11. I put the air pressure from 30lbs up to 40lbs to help with the added weight, and now that wagon has a noticeable sway to it when loaded. Never did before. Who knows, anyway I agree with you about not loaning things out. Very seldom works out. Dad, Brother and myself use our equipment. I have 1 cousin also who can use our equipment when he wants. Without fail he'll bring an item back in better condition than when he took it. "Awh, I figured I'd change the oil while I had it here anyway." "Noticed it had a bearing that was a little loud so I quick replaced it." I always offer to pay him and he will never take anything. So, a few are great to loan to, most are not. Had another neighbor who wanted to borrow the cattle trailer to haul a horse for his daughter 10 miles. Two weeks later the trailer had not been brought back so we went looking. Last time I checked Indiana is not 10 miles for Minnesota. That's where it was. Figured since he had it anyway we wouldn't mind. Must have locked the breaks up pretty good on it at one point because we ended up replacing two tire when we got it back because they had severe flat spots burned into them. Also had to weld the swinging divider door back on and weld a safety chain back on from turning to short. We were not impressed!

Neither a borrower or a lender be! Either that is in the bible or my grandfather told me it was. Good fences make good neighbors, and we are not just talking livestock.

From your answer you have
1) never been married
2) presently divourced
3) married more than once
But if slapping your wife around makes you feel more like a man, your problem

I have had that same problem. Borrowing something and forgetting who and who
I borrowed it to forgot as well. Now I put my initials on everything with a paint marker. It helps alot.

Dave, have you talked to the guy that borrowed it? Tell him what you tell us. And tell him not to ask for anyting else in the future. It is your equipment, so control it. Tom

of course slapping was a joke but, how could she "forget" never to lend your stuff? That is one of the most elementary principles that we are taught as kids...if it does not belong to you leave it alone. does she have that little respect for you? You cannot tell her in words that she will remember? Are you that weak and just let her run you over? I really feel bad for you. A guy at work is like that, he comes to work often beaten by his wife, she literally ripped his hair out once...he is the joke at work...wonder where Lxxxx is?? wife beat him up again??

We loaned out 2 Gravty wagons for sheel corn use[Field to dryer ] 15 years ago,And That Was the Last Straw !!! In the middle of the winter we had to go Repo them back. The Guy had no Intension of Returning them ,they were at 2 different farms,They Had Never Been Greased,They Had Hauled them In The Road SALT,to the point the 1 king pin was Set Up. We had to Heat It With a ROSE BUD to Get it free and Remove for Clean Up.P.S. Now Other Farmers Wonder Just WHY WE DONT LOAN OUT OUR EQUIPMENT !!!
