OT Good price on an old Drill Press?

I am unsure what brand it is, but it is an older drill press and in really good shape. Was used only for wood (but I would use it for wood and metal).

Is $50 a fair price for it, when bidding? I mean, what does a decent used drill press go for these days? It's just a bench-top press that is about 2 feet tall or so, not like a whole 5' stand or anything.

What's fair? Fair to you or the seller? If it's being auctioned they must not be too concerned and hoping for enough to want it to drive the price up. Fair to you (me) would be the amount of work it would save, how much does a new one cost and does my needs justify spending the extra bucks to have new or should I buy used and prolly get something better than what is on the shelf now. If I found a comparable one cheaper, does the savings get wiped out be extra travel???

Did that muddy things up enough??

Brands to look for, Delta precision,Rockwell,Walker-Turner,Buffolo-Forge. Parts still available again depends on brand.Southbend is a good one too.$50 is cheap for one of these models in good condition. To ckeck use a magnetic based dial indicator and check the runout on the chuck should be within .001 the old ones are the best. Regards, John

With out a brand name and model its real hard to say. it could be one of those cheapies sold by Harbor freight a real good brand made here.

A few years ago I shopped for a bench type drill press with a 1/2 chuck for my home shop. I must have been in every store that had a drill press for sale in Fort Wayne Indiana several times over a two month period before I bought a (China junk) drill press. Best little drill press I found. The top dollar drill press looked just like the one I bought but whith the quill all the way down you could move the chuck sideways way to much for my dollar. The one I bought did not have the movment.
I had some small aluminum parts I wanted to slot with a 1/8" mill cutter. I bought a (China junk) slide vise and it/they did a fine job.
It aint all price or the manufacture. It is the tolarances held on the one you buy. The store I bought the drill press from told me I would have to take one in a box and I told them no it was the one I picked out or a no sale.

Okay, just got a chance to look it over, and seems like it's in really good condition. It's a TRI STAR 5 speed drill press with a 1/3 HP motor. I figure I'm willing to drop about $20 to $30 on it? Sound fair?
