Hey,
Just stepped out of the building (I'm at work) in time to see a Hoot Owl carry swoop into the yard and take off with a rabbit.... Been here 20 years and saw 2 big owls in the wild, both this week. Maybe I oughta buy a lottery ticket

They are neat to see. Couple of years ago I went out late at night to bring some firewood in.
A owl hooted at me from about five feet away. It made the hair on my neck stand up on end.

Ifin yer gonna buy a lottery ticket I suggest ya buy one here in Pa ---NO one here wins the big ones. you have a better chance. I want half for the suggestion though ~~~LOL

I been talkin back to em for years, neighbors look at ya funny when they catch on though.
They are beautiful birds.

There areplenty of wildlife parks (small zoo's) here where rescued animals are taken care of and have an as close to natural and still be contained habitat. There are several in each one. When I first met my wife we went to the park and was by the owls. She started whoo whooing and was all wrapped up in it cause they were all watching her that the poor thing didn't realize I was recording the show. Sure is a handy video to have around

There has been a huge old owl staying out in Dad's big barn.

I'm not sure if that is what is eating the cats, but something is killing & eating them.

The remains (tail, paws, etc) are always laying at the corner of the workbench under the vise where other birds sometimes perch...

Pretty weird!

2002,,was driving along to next field to bale, when a Owl swooped down and Picked up a nearly 3ft snake off the road bank ,, took it up some 50 ft up and dropped that snake on the road right in front of the tractor ,at which time I ran over a very disoriented snake , who immedeatly became dinner for that Big Wise OWL ....

About 15 years ago my brother started noticing his cats were disappearing. Finally one evening we were standing out in the driveway between his shop and house. He had a dusk to dawn light. A small cat was about halfway to the house. We caught a glimpse of feathers, a flash really, and that cat went up into the night sky. Meow, Meow, Meow, and it faded away.

Next evening, same time, same place, except a scoped .270. Big puff of feathers. Cats quit disappearing.

I was studying in an empty classroom on a Sunday afternoon on the 2nd story of the engineering building at UT Arlington years ago. I heard a thump on the window and looked out to see a little barn owl not 8 inches tall on the window ledge being beaten up by a couple of crows who were really ganging up on it. That was one time I really felt sorry for the owl.

Cool. That reminds me of the time I was combining beans and a rabbit was running just in front of the reel. Could not figure out why it wouldn't just run to the side and be out of the way until it finally did and then I saw the biggest bird I have ever seen come down out of the air and grab that poor critter! Think it was a hawk.

I would prefer the owl over the cats. An owl will eat way more rodents than a worthless, stinking, crap everywhere, begging for food cat.

We had a bunch of pigeons get into the head house of the mill building at work last year. Birds of any kind are stictly a bad thing in the building and nearly impossable to chase out, kinda like herding cats. Shooting at anything inside a concrete structure is way too risky and gassing a food grade storage area pretty tough as well. One night I went up to check a couple bin levels and noticed a pile of feathers. Looking around thru the pipes and drags, I discovered a barn owl. We found where the birds had gotten in and sealed it up. I set a bucket of clean water out and told everyone to leave the owl alone. within 2 days there were more than a dozen more piles of feathers and no evidence of pigeons, mice or any other "undesirables". Were proped open a door at one end of the building and several of us put on a "drive" and forced the owl out of the building. Problem solved.

We have two cats in our barn. They keep the mice
and rats under control. They do not beg for food or get under foot. They are very much appreciated. I have a lot of trouble understanding hatred for any animal.

I was sitting in a deer stand one cold morning, right after daylight, an owl came swooping through the trees and headed straight at me. Of course, I flinched and the owl landed on a limb about 3 feet above my head. Talking about waking you up. He then noticed me after about 5 seconds and flew off.

About a month ago I was driving home from work (West KY) and saw my first "in the wild" bald eagle soaring at tree top height along the edge of the road. Then, about 2 weeks ago I saw the same eagle sitting in a dead tree overlooking some old mine property at the same location.

oh HughB don't get so worked up, i don't hate cats I just don't keep them around my place because i feel they are worthless and are not effective in controlling rodents. I am willing to bet that if your rodent population is under control, you don't have a great population of them or your cats are getting help from somewhere in nature after dark. I would never kill a hawk, owl, badger, weasel, fox, bobcat or snake because I DO HATE rodents (except rabbits). Unfortunately the poor little rabbits have to suffer from existence of the aforementioned predators however. Deer and skunks....I blast anytime I can.

But now if I saw a cat get carried off by a owl....THAT WOULD BE COOL.

A guy I know (a really weird guy) found a dead owl hit by a car on a bridge and he threw it on the back of his truck. He brought it over and we were examining it. What a powerful, beautiful bird that was. Massive claws, powerful legs, big wide wing span, just the perfect animal for ripping rats to shreds. How could anyone ever willingly kill something like that?

We have one that sits on top of a power pole in front of the house in the spring at dusk. First time we notice it we thought that the top of the post was rotating.

Came home one night and about ran right through the kitchen door, screech Owl about 30 feet away in a tree cut loose and I about sh!t my pants.
