I washed my 630 john deere yesterday and after I finished the starter wont work, so I put in neutral and went under the tractor , removed the starter plate to check it out , when I wiggled the battery cable the starter kick in and didnt stop, I jump out from under the tractor and it wouldnt stop so I went back under there and move the cable away from the little wire it was touching, and it stopped , but my point is always disconnect the cable at the battery when you do something stupid like I did,if the tractor had been in gear it would have ran over me, Im glad I can tell this story today, so always disconnect the battery when your under a tractor working on the starter, oh the cable was loss , after I tightened it all was ok.

A good lesson for all of us Rick.

It's easy to skip that step when you're in a hurry, and you're right - it could be fatal.

Glad you weren't hurt.

We had a local guy who used a screwdriver to jump the starter solenoid on a big John Deere. It started immediately, was in gear and got on his foot before he could move. It threw him to the ground and started up his leg. He tried to squirm to the side to no avail. He was face down and could hear and feel the ribs popping as it came up his back. He thought it would crush his heart, and also his head. It popped one eye out, and shot his head out from under the back tire like a watermelon seed, pulling the skin and meat off of the side of his face. It had a five bottom plow on it, but it was raised, and the tail wheel missed him. It hung up momentarily on the edge of an old chicken house, but it slid free and started out across the neighborhood. Went through several fences and finally bottomed out as it went over a pond levee.

He survived.

It would have killed a skinny guy like me.

After he got out of the hospital, I heard him tell his story in the local restaurant.

You could have heard a pin drop.

He said it happened quick, but in his mind it seemed like it took forever for it to get off of him.

Be careful.

God help us All,,, Sooner or later , some of us get in a bind and have to take a risk ,, TRUE STORY . about 25 years ago, Neighbor finally got himself a nice 730 diesel , Loved planting to that 2 cylindar sound ,, 730 had a couple ailments though,,,It did not like to start hot ,, No big problem , The Ol gal didn't use any fuel at all at idle , and hardly any all day long planting ... so they let it idle even while they did the milken'... 2nd ailmemnt was nearly fatal and WAS to a 38"new tire , The crankshaft nut had a tendency to back off from time to time,. No thread lokker seemed to work,.He noticed one day the damjamnut had backed off again, level field , no chain to give the 730 a pull and naturally in a hurry to beat the coming rains and willing to take a STUPID RISK . SOOO.!... he idled that motor to a near stall than took that big wrench and tried to catch that nut,! his wife told him" Virgal, I don't think this is a good idea" about the time that wrench caught and immediatly threw it headlong into the new back tire !! ,, ,. they told me that story a couple days after that event and MY knees went weak ... His wife nearly had heart failure right on the spot . That wrench could had easily sliced thru both of them and laid them BOTH dead ! . Within a week at the WIFES URGING that 730 got traded on a nice JD 2030 ,, Today , All is well and they are Propering along commiserate to their efforts .. AND ,they have another extra nice JD 730 That has a jamnut that stays PUT,.. but occassionally, They will share that harrowing story , especially around young Guys that like to take risks ... Blessings to ALL of You ,...And As that fellas Wife would say " Lets Not wear Out Our Guardian Angels by keeping them constantly on Their toes"
