Maybe not a good idea

Some time back I told how I put a wireless doorbell button under my mailbox door out by the road, so that the opened door would push the button and chimes would ring in the house. Even the paper delivery would punch it when the afternoon paper came. It worked. For awhile. The $4 battery gave up in about a month and then the button quit working. Device too cheaply made, I think. So I take back my great idea....it stinks! Leonard

Leo. We hooked up a wireless switch to turn our Irrigation pump on and off. I can set in my chair and do this. It is sort of like a garage door opener. Have another to go on the pipe pulling part. It has to have a switch that will trip and trigger the sendiing unit then disconect or it will tigger the sending unit and it be on all of the time and run down the little battery in the sending unit. Sound complicated but is really simple. Just remeber once the button on the sending switch is pressed down it has to be released or it will keep on sending and run down the batery. I got all the stuff on E-bay for $20 and it controls a 10 HP motor.

Those wireless doorbells are notoriously unreliable. I have two and you have to punch the button at the top or bottom to make them ring. I put a sign by the one at the front door that said "Punch Here".

If the mailbox can be seen from the house,They do make a kit involving a little spring loaded [I believe yellow flag], that pops up when door is opened, then you reset to down position when getting your mail.

Have you thought of using a magnetic reed switch? All the parts are sealed and none to wear out.

My parents have used the pop up flags on their mail boxes for years. Easy to install and it works great.
