970 hydralic problems

I have an older (yellow) Case 970 w powershift. Put a new relief valve in a couple years ago and had trouble with hyd system this year. Replaced all the oil at that time. Oil gets hot and will not lift either cylinder or 3 pt arms with a load. Cold, it is fine, hyd oil temp went almost to red zone and even had trouble with powershift going in reverse. My mechanic also has two older Cases doing the same thing and can not figure out what is wrong. Did isolate a problem with using a single action cylinder. Tractor is worthless without hyd and 3 pt for me. It is not used much except for spring and fall. Maybe 50 hrs for the year. Any ideas? All filters are changed each year.

Your oil should not be getting that hot. Sounds like the flow divider (relief) isn't set right. Go to the Case board and ask for mEl.

Had the same problem on ours until we switched from fleet farm oil to actual Hy-Tran oil purchased at the Case I.H. dealer. You mentioned changing filters. Are they from Case I.H.? That seemed to make a difference too. I try to save a few bucks when I can, but I found out name brand oil and filters do pay off.

They are Case filters, but not HyTran oil. What symtoms was your tractor giving you? Did the oil heat up quickly?

I am new to this discusson thing, how do I get to the Case board and target the member you mentioned? Thanks

The oil got very hot in the tractor differential and transmission housing. It got to the point the hydraulics wouldn't open the end gate on my baler and the transmission, brakes, steering, and clutch wouldn't work. I called my local dealer, and the first thing he asked is what kind of oil I was using. I told him, and he said I'm not a salesman, but I will tell you if you use Case I.H. Hy-Tran oil and Case I.H. filters, your problem should most likely be solved. It went from the oil so hot I couldn't put my bare hand on the transmission, to a slight warm to the touch feeling. Completely took care of my problem. Everything works great on the tractor now.
