Diesel tank smells like varnish.

Just a few days or weeks ago someone had a message on here about bacteria or something in old diesel tanks. I read it and forgot what I read! Is there an additive to put in the tank to correct the problem or must the old fuel be drained? I recently got a tractor that had sat a while and fuel tank smells like varnish. I've added fuel, used the tractor, added more fresh fuel-still blackish fuel that stinks. Tractor seems to run well .

You need to add a biocide. Check with a fuel distributor in your area for his reccomendations.
The black stuff as you call it is actually a live bacteria that lives in the fuel. it stops up filters like glue that has dried.

Do you get "Killem" at auto parts store or Tractor supply or from fuel distributor? And thanks for the info, folks.
