O.T. Seven Legged Calf

Here are some pictures I thought I would share with all of you. This calf was born in the very early 1990's on my brother in law's farm in Avistion Il. It had three extra legs under its tail. They may be hard to count in these pictures. It grew up to a full size cow and the extra limbs were a burden on the animal when it ran. They did end up butchering the animal.

People from far and near came to take pictures of this animal back then. I wish I would of posted these on here before now.

When i was a young lad in the 40s our neightbor had a 7 legged calf,it was also a hwolstein,It died and he had it stuffed,It had 3 legs in the middle.James

I had a neighbor back in the 70"s that had a cow that gave birth to a half cow/half deer. It made major tv networks. They said it met up with a studly buck in the pasture. I believe it only lived about 6 months.

That's what you call having spares, huh? Tears ago my uncle had a Holstein calf born with two heads but didn't live too long.

I am surprised that it lived to adulthood with that obvious serious birth defect. My guess is that the extra legs were part of a cojoined twin that only partly developed during the gestation period. Were vets interested in examining the unusual calf?

Just out of curiosity, was the mother of the 7 legged calf able to have other calves after that? And if so, were the following calves OK?

When I was a kid, one of our milk cows had twin heifers. For some reason, that cow could never get pregnant again, although she came into heat every month. Neither of the heifers were ever able to get pregnant either, and all 3 of them ended up being sold at the stockyards. We never knew just what happened or why they could not settle. Darn shame too, they were nice animals.

That happened on our farm too, short tail, skinny ears and a deer shaped head....I guess its all about the angle of the dangle.....

Pretty wild.

When I was catch'n chickens at night to fund my farming habit I would see one or two birds a month that had extra legs grow'n out under the tail. We always joked that they sold the little legs as wings cause thats about as big as they ever got. Once a year or so you would see one with 6 legs. Pretty odd looking when things don't come out as planed.
