93 ford truck door handles

93 Ford one ton, door handle keeps breaking. Every one I talk to has had the same problem. When I go get a new one the folks at the counter always tell me I should get a handfull. Some folks just drive a screw driver in the bolt hole and be done with it. I would like something a little better than that. Does any one have a good idea on a way to fix this where it will last more than a few months?

Replace the door latch assembly. there is a cable in there that streches and that is why you go thru handles. fprd part #F4TZ-15219A64-A THAT FITS RIGHT SIDE. LEFT SIDE IS 65-A. that will take care of all your problems for about 5 to 10 years
 
You can replace just the cable as well. Thats what I did to mine. Shoot me an e-mail and I can send you the write-up I did on how to do it. Other thing to do is buy the older style metal door handles, they last a little longer and are cheaper if I remember right. I've tried the bolt as a handle trick and it's just easier to replace the cable. Not a bad job, really.

Ford gave me some little plastic sheild to put inside the door over the cable to keep water off of it. They claimed in the winter, moisture would freeze the cable - then cause it to stretch when you open it...

No more than it helped me - I don't really buy that theory.

I started using old push rods out of an engine - weld it to a small metal plate & then bent the rod to the original contour of the handle...

I've fixed 4 or 5 that way... I just got tired of snapping those plastic ones off...

The cable is stretched, causing you to bang the handle against the stop and the plastic can't take it.

A quick cure is to get the handle end of the cable loose and wind it up a few turns(in the same direction of the twist in the cable of course) and reassemble. This in effect shortens the cable.
