welding forklift masts

I'm going to build a large hydraulic press using forklift mast for the structural steel. Any particulars to welding this? It will have a lot of pressure on it and i want it to be safe.

Could we see a picture when you have it completed?

Just the other day I easily pressed some round bar into the end of a piece of pipe using my 8000 lb forklift. A sledge hammer wouldn't do the job and my press wasn't tall enough.

my experience with forklift mast welding has been using the c channel sections welded together to form a box for making a root rake frame for our dozer. they worked and welded just like any other structural steel, i dont think they are any special alloy, i used 7014 and 7018 for most of the welding, for a press which is a bit more critical i would use the 7018 to be safe, but most of the masts i have seen and seen repaired appeared to be nothing outa the ordinary
