i have a suburbinite one wheel garden tractor with the motor mounted inside the large iron wheel. an auctioneer found it in an old book and said it was made between 1920 and 1925 by american farm machinery co. in minneapolis, minn. they sold out to kinkaid in 1925 and they made this tractor till 1930 and called it a kinkaid. i need info. on this machine if anybody can help me out.

If it only has one wheel, how does it stay up? Is it like a unicycle? It must be a real bear to stay on the seat, and as soon as you pull something, it falls over backward. (Or am I just being facetious?)

Not entirely correct.

American Farm Equipment started business in December, 1921, and quit in 1955. It was formed from the Andrews Tractor Company and the Andrews-Kinkade Tractor Company. They made the "Kinkade" model one-wheel tractor model in the 1920s. They later branded some one-wheelers as "Vikings" and "Viking Suburbanites." That was in the late 40s and early 50s. In 1954, the one-wheel Viking-Suburbanite was the cheapest tractor they sold.

There were several one-wheel tractors as well as one-track crawlers. All had handles you guided them with, just like a wheel-barrow.

Does it look something like this?

No, sorry I don't know anything about them. After reading your post I did a search as I had never seen one (seen plenty of the David Bradly type with two wheels) and ran across that picture. I'll include the link to that page below. I was curious about the rear wheels and what their purpose were, now that you posted a picture of yours it appears the wheels were homemade and possibly just used for stability. It sort of looks like it has a hitch on the rear too, maybe to pull a sulky? Who knows. Anyway, go to the link (the picture of the Suburbinite is on page 1) but also click on the link on the left side of the page for "Photos", lots of intersting tractor pics. There is also a place you can post your picture too.
Good luck on your search!

I never had a Suburanite tractor from American Farm Machinery, but I did have a Viking back in 1960 and 5 or 6 StandardTwins in the 1970's. I still have the moldboard plow off the Viking. I always thought they were way ahead of the times with an all gear driven tractor with a clutch that ran in oil. Also they had a PTO. Hal
