Tire size vs rim size?

I currently have 12.4-38 on my JD A and am in need of new tires but would like a wider tire. Will a 13.6-38 fit my 10 inch rim and still keep the tread rather flat or should I find wider rims?
Thanks, Mitch

if i remember right,a 12.4 and a 13.6 are now the same size.or they dont make 12.4 anymore

You can get by with a 13.6 on that rim but it will look a bit odd. That rim is just a tad narrow for that size of tire but I have done it before. I think if I remember right a 13.6 needs a 11 or 12 inch rim but since I'm lazy I'll not go out and look to be sure. Yep the tire should have right on it the size rim that it should go on so just go look at some new tires and read what it says on them

You can safely go an inch wider or narrower than the rim width. Using new size markings, your 12.4 was the old 11 inch tire, fits ok on the 10 inch rim. 13.6 is the old 12 inch, would not fit well. Both of those sizes are still being made, they are not the same size.

I missed the obvious 10" rim width right in your post.
11.2X38 is designed for a 10" rim.
Unless you already have a set of 13.6X38's in mind. You will like 14" rims and 15.5X38" tires.

Thanks guys, was thinking I'd need wider rims but didn't really want to have to mess with that too.

11-12.4 tires were standard on all JD A tractors and 95% of them now run 13.6 on the orignal rims with no problem, just put the 13.6 on those rims and forget it, will work as good as the orignal 11-12.4 do. Same way with the Farmall M tractors as they orignaly had the 11 and most now run the 13.6 on those orignal rims.
