General clutch question

I have been having trouble with the clutch on my Allis B. It is adjusted so that the pedal will open the pressure plate as far as it will travel and both the pressure plate and the flywheel are free of rust.

However when the tractor is running, the clutch will not release enought to allow me to put the tractor in gear. I need to idle the engine down almost to a stall, then shove it into gear. I can't imagine this is normal. The throw-out bearing is questionable. Would this cause my problem?

I'm thinking there is a broken finger on the pressure plate. You are pulling the pressure plate off the flywheel with only 2 fingers and the clutch plate is still in contact with both on the side that is broken. To fix it, you'll have to replace the pressure plate by splitting the tractor.

Kind of doubt that. I broke a finger on our old Allis B about 1957 and it still stayed engaged enough to drive the tractor. No way could you shift it into a gear, even at an idle. Most likely the pilot bearing is dry and dragging.
Either way the tractor has to be spilt to fix it. Fortunately an Allis B is about as easy to split as anything.

Well, the rest of the story is that the tractor was split last winter when I rebuilt the engine. When I put it back together I noted that the throw-out bearing was sticky, but spun ok when aligned properly. I completely disassembled and cleaned the pressure plate assembly, no broken parts there. The pilot bearing also looked ok, I lubed it with assembly grease when I assembled everything.

What should I have used on the pilot bearing? 10wt motor oil?

Not sure what to tell you to look for, grease should have been fine on the pilot bearing. A sticky or defective throwout bearing should not cause your problem. Clutches are simple enough that your problem should be apparent when you get in to it.
