Scratched Glass

I bought a tractor at a sale. Whoever had the tractor before me used the windshield wiper with a bad wiper blade. Needless to say the tractor looks like it has a smilely face etched in the glass from the wiper. (Really, I bought it that way, I didn't do it. I am tempted to paint a dot in each corner of the windshield though.) Is there any way to make the scratched glass look better without replacing the glass? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks. Mark

There are products for polishing glass. Never tried them myself but I have seen them. You buff the glass with compound . I imagine a LOT depends on how bad/deep it is scratched and your patience level to polish it clear again.

Auto Glass Specialists came to the dealer where I used to work and got out a pretty nasty scratch in a new Buick. They worked at it with power tools for a while, though.

An outfit like that might be your best bet.

If not too deep it can be buffed out with jewelers rouge which is the finest grit compound around. Also, with a buffing pad on an orbital sander you could try polishing compound. The glass people have a way of filling cracks and chips so you might ask one of them what they use. Henry

Here's a very temporary fix that I used on my first car when I was a kid. Put a drop of brake fluid on your finger and smear it on the streak. Doesn't last too long but it does cover it.
