well i got the little pup trailer here, a long day, wasnt easy, it looked scary kingpin to landing gear wise, but after i removed my mud flaps, i eased back under it with the tractor , just when i knew it wouldnt go i got clunk! as the fifth wheel jaws closed, got it hooked, but you know theres always a But, this one was in the form of the landing gear having 12 inch in diameter steel pads on the end of the legs which were now 2 inches from the rear tires on the truck, i cant turn now at all, after over a hour trying to unscrew the pads, [ former carolina freight lines trailer] i got the fire wrench and removed them , no way to unbolt the gear, it was mostly welded on what bolts there were were very coroded, after bulding a set of wires so i had turn and brake lites from scratch, airing up the tires, which were suprisingly good, and putting gear lube in the dry axle hubs i hit the road, all the way back no trouble

as mentioned a pup trailer is a 28 foot box van, usually pulled on the road in sets of 2, one hooked to the tractor, which is usualy a single rear axle unit and the 2nd trailer hooked to the rear of the first one by a dolly the advantage of this is allowing ltl freight going to the same area but to different recievers to be hauled by one power unit, then once at the town the tractor can then deliver each trailer seperatly, fed ex, roadway lee way ect are some of the big names using pup trailers, they also make real nice storage unite that can be easily moved when they are no longer road worthy, thats what this unit is for

Let me clarify one point if I may.

LTL carriers usually have 1 to 20 or more stops on one pup trailer. The big reason for using pups is because you can haul loads going to two differant towns together.

Lets say you are loading in Atlanta. You may only have 1/2 a load going to Nashville Tn and 1/2 a load going to Memphis Tn. The driver could leave Atlanta and once he got to Nashville all he would have to do is break the set apart and hook his Memphis trailer to a trailer Nashville may have loaded for Memphis. He would then be on his way with out having to wait for a dock crew to unload and load the trailers.
