O.T.--BIG TIME--But I need advise

My brother recently passed away and in his belongings I found a strange looking cap that is beautiful with a black tassle hanging from the top. It has "CAHABA" with gold letters and I am sure it is associated with the Masonic Lodge he was a member of. There is a silver "100" badge, or pin, inside the box.
I also found a thick, hardbound book---MORALS and DOGMA.
My brother was very sick for a long time and was unable to advise me concerning his belongings.
What are my obligations, if any, concerning these items?

Sorry to hear about his passing. You're not Obligated to anything. If you don't want to keep the stuff yourself, contact someone from his lodge and ask them if they'll give it a home. We've had a couple of Brothers pass from our lodge and have some of their stuff on display in the lodge.

Just a thought.

Dave

Sounds like a Shriner's fez. Maroon with a black tassel? That'd be it.

The Cahaba Shrine is in Huntsville. No obligations on your part, but Google up the Cahaba Shrine if you want to talk to somebody there about it.

The strange looking cap is known as a Fez. It is named after a city in the middle east and is the official headware for the Masonic group known as Shriners, great guys all and known for their charities. At one time the only way to become a shriner was to be a member of first of all the Blue Lodge and then one of the appendant bodies AKA the Scottish Rite and the York Rite of Masonry. Albert Pike was a Great Mason and Scholar and was the author of the Book titled Morals and Dogma, and was the Founder of the Southern Jurisdiction of the Scottish Rite. The Book is in possession of most Scottish Rite Masons, but most have never read it. Its some real deep reading and almost universalily misunderstood by those outside of the Masonic order. The words on the Fez are the name of the Shrine Temple to which he belonged, and the 100 symbol means that he had, as was expected of all Shriners, donated to the 100 Million Dollar Club which benefited the Shrine Hospitals

I'm surprised your Brother's fellow Lodge Members have not already shown up and ask to re-claim the Masonic products.
My self, I would not dare to touch or look at the material. The Masons are a powerful organization who like to keep their secrets a secret. They are one of the few groups and organizations I make a point of not messing with, not annoying them and not being curious about.
I would call the Masons and ask them to send a couple of Members that know you from around the community. Odds are you would have never guessed they were Masons until they appear.
Say yes sir, no sir when appropriate and let them find and retrieve all Mason artifacts. Tell them you will go to your grave without repeating anything you have seen or heard.

Around here all the masons do is good deeds/donations and don't
want any publicity for it. I've never heard of them causing any ill.

I'd return the stuff to them.

Past Master of Decorah Lodge, of Galesville WI,
Past Thrice Potent Master of Scottish Rite,
Vally of LaCrosse Wisconsin, but never joined
the Shriners, as the local group was a bunch of
Clowns. We sent over $50,000 to the Shrine
Childrens Hospital at St Paul each year !

The Masons are not anyone you'd ever have to worry about. It's sad that so many people have such a misconstrued idea of what masonry is all about, and you certainly can't believe any of the crud that I have seen on television about them.
None of my fellow masons would worry one iota about whether someone has books, regalia, or any of the like from a masonic lodge in their posession. Seems to me if a layman were to read the ritual books from our lodges, then they'd have a much better opinion about us and maybe want to join themselves. Every part of our rituals is available online for anyone to see, and I'd be more than happy to answer questions from anyone on this forum, and I am sure all of my fellow masons on this site would feel the same.

If you don't want the items, call the lodge, they will be happy to re home them. Fowlerville #164 , Michigan.

Henderson Lodge # 477, Abou Ben Adhem Shrine Temple, Valley of Joplin Scottish Rite, Past Potentates aid twice, past temple trustee, Past Rajah of my Shrine Club, Past Clamaxie of the "Q".

it is so nice to know that there are (it sounds like) many fine men (masons) such as myself they do fine work as stated above w/o reqognition and shriners support shriners childrens hosp in many ways (money &volunteering) in burn units& crippled children your brother was a good man.

let us not forget ameranth & eastern star for the ladies and demoly and jobs daughters for the kids fine organizations all

They are well connected, loyal to each other and come from all walks of life.
If annoyed they can make your relations with the municipal government, banks, entire legal system, everything. Very slow and prone to accidental errors.
Do not tick off any of them.

Anti-Masonry was an early part of American history, and they brought it upon themselves. Before the days of law schools a person studied to be a lawyer by reading law at an established lawyers office. Sort of like an apprenticeship. Most lawyers were masons, and they clannishly only accepted other masons to read at their offices. Since most politicians and all judges were lawyers, this was seen as a conspiracy to control the government.

But that is all from before the civil war.

My father and his ancestors were all Masons. I remember my Dad had the Fez, the sword and sheath for it, and various other accouterments, when he died. We also had his sword, and his father's sword and other things. Dad belonged to "The nnalert Grotto", here in Pittsburgh, Pa. I think my Mother gave the swords, or sold them, to the masons.
When i got out of the Army in WW II, i had lost my left foot from a war injury, so that precluded me from entering the Masons, in this area! Dad was upset, but the rules in this area were set in stone, and i didn't get in. So, i made my own way without their help!
I have had many friends who were and are Masons, and it doesn't bother me that i couldn't join, and now the thought of joining is far from my mind!
Later on in life, i was told--if i would go to the east coast to one of the towns there, they weren't so tough on the rules, and would take me in, but i thanked them and stayed home. I had to work and had a lot of expenses that took a lot of our money to keep current on, so i gave it up.

I'm NOT a Mason, but have a very deep appreciation for them.

Five of the seven founders of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry (aka GRANGE) were Masons. My Dad joined both orders about the same time and said many times that he had a very difficult time keeping the rituals separate in his mind due to the close similarity.

A few years ago, I attended a Masonic Funeral Service (graveside)...came home and read the Grange Funeral Service. The two services were eerily similar. The symbolism is/was beautiful and quite touching.

I am a 50 year member of the Grange. Well, more like a "lifetime" member as Dad attended a Grange meeting on the evening I was born and announced my birth. I've seen the meeting minutes!!

Grange ritual has had a profound influence on what I believe about life and how to get along with other people...especially those whose opinions I disagree with.

MASONS...a wonderful organization!!

In years past I know it was true about missing body parts but most Grand Lodges today have either rescinded that part of the rule or have added an addendum that lets the Grand Master waive that part for people in you situation. I for one would encourage you to submit a new petition and an review by the GM . Since you family history is Masonic I would fight to get you in here in NC any time. We have people with Artificial limbs and missing parts and they are some of the greatest masons I know of Henry

I have personally observed a phenomenon at work several times.
When something goes wrong, the degree of loyalty between Masons is one of the strongest bonds I've ever observed. Sometimes it's a good thing.Other times I've seen some very obvious and public "bad stuff" get "swept under the rug". That otherwise should have been dealt with.
There can be favors to assist friends/brothers and favors to impede those who had the misfortune to raise a mason's ire.
I've seen people hired and promoted due to membership. And observed better people passed over.
It's just a good idea to stay out of their way.
