Follow up question to D17 12 volt

How do I tell if its a 12 volt or a 6 volt generator on a tractor? Assuming the lights are not marked.

I think also on Delcos the black tags were 6 volt and the reds 12 volt, can anyone confirm that????????

Also if one uses an ohmmeter to measure the combined field resistances (sum of each side) I think the 6 volt would be around 3 ohms while the 12 volt would be more like 6, can anyone confirm that???

I think the 6 volters have smaller commutator segments on the armature

If the generator is charging a battery count the cells on the battery. Six on a 12 volt & 3 on a 6v bat.

If you have an auto electrical shop near you , take it in and run it on a test bench. The operator should be able to tell.

John T is right about the colors. Red = 12V. Black = 6V. The 6V generators are the same diameter the whole length of it. A 12V generator is smaller in diameter at the brush end.
P.S. All D series were 12V from the factory...
