Everyone else was asking Dodge questions today. So I thought I would ask mine too. The computer says I have a P0500 error. My brake light and ABS light is on. Speedometer is not working. Which sensor should I replace?

thanks

P0500 is a speed sensor, but check your wheel hubs before you just change the sensor. Make sure that there isn't some damage that would cause the sensor to accurately show a fault.

The year of your Dodge makes a difference. Going on guess work its your anti-lock sensor in rear axle that reads off ring gear. david

P0500, as stated, is a speed sensor error. What eith the warning lights, it could be a bad signal from the speed sensor conflicting with the signals from the ABS, or vice versa.

Just a heads up on the combination of the brake and ABS warning lights coming on together. That's one sign of a hot wheel bearing. It gets hot enough to toast the ABS sensor. Do not ask where I was or the time of night when I encountered that phenomenon or how many hours later it was pointed out to me. Or what I had hitched to the back of my Ram when it all took place. I had successfully put that experience out of mind until you posted.

Before replacing the speed center at the top of the rear axle pumpkin, check the wiring harness that comes out above the gas tank and leads back along the leaf spring over to the sensor.

My son has the same problem. We know the abs has something wrong. Idiot pulled out in front of him and he locked down we sur cut some dados before we stop but missed him. He has many of the same symptom, He has been trying run it down. Yes we know it is dangerous.

Let me expand on gitrib's description of my well used and abused truck. It is a 96 ton 4x4. The trany went out at 150,000 or there abouts. Naturally I was hauling feed and far from home. Anyway, I had the tranny rebuilt but did not rebuild the transfer case. The guy said it was worn, but I really didn't have time to wait on that. At about 188,000 the speedometer went flaky (on a very long trip, good by cruise control). Somewhere along the way the abs and brake light came on on the dash. I did change the speed sensor. There was a TSB on them and there had been problems. The new one was installed and the wire splices were soldered and shrink wrapped. The speedometer still does not work, except on very long trips and then it just waves around, but never higher than the approximate speed. I've changed the sensor on top of the pumpkin twice, most recently this winter. No joy. At this point, the transfer case does indeed need to be rebuilt, and the rear end has started making clicking noises when I am making a turn. It is a limited slip diff. So there are two things that might be related and can't be put off much longer. I would appreciate any advice or suggestions. I did price a new replacement this weekend and I decided that for $50,000 I can do a LOT or repair and replace on this truck.
