I'm wondering how SMALL of a FUSE -- I can use on a 225 Lincoln WELDER , it's AC-DC if that makes a difference...
Will a 30 amp be too small ??

Want to THANK YOU in advance ... for any and all replys ...

I am by no means a electrican but I would say that is definetly to small.

What does the info on the nameplate say? On my Millermatic 215 it gives KW.Divide by voltage. In my case it was 26 amps maybe.Cord is for a fifty amp receptacle.I will probably put it on whatever spare two pole breaker is close in the panel 30 or 40.[this is not a complete answer as wire size will dictate breaker size.]Give nameplate info.

There should be a tag or sticker on the welder that will tell you the primary current draw of the welder. You then can size the over current protection by that. Take your primary current and multiply by 200% and that will be your fuse/breaker size. Say your primary current is 30 amps, then your fuse/breaker would be 60 amps.
Your supply conductors should be 70% of the rated primary current.

Using a too small fuse will only result in blown fuses. You need to look at the wire guage of the circuit and determine if 30 amps is all it can safely handle. If you are welding intermitantly at a low setting you might make it work.

30 amp will work for short duration light welding. If you get to pushing the welder to it's maximum, or for any duration, the heat generated will lead to more resistance and a larger draw.

If you have the wire to support it, I'd suggest 50 amp. That's what the welder calls for...

Mark,

The fuse must be matched to the cable size or lower. Don't over fuse your conductors.

I have used my 300 amp buzz box on a 30 amp fuse/#10 wire. Of course, I was only welding at 90 amps or so.

Not a permanent solution - a 50 amp circuit is what you should aim for.
